BS: BeProud-YourTax $$$ Feed the Bureacracy

Subject: BS: BeProud-YourTax $$$ Feed the Bureacracy

So back in June I go in to renew my Driver's License and find I cannot do so because the State of North Carolina has a block on it! I was dumbfounded and a little freaked out but called the number I was given for both the North Carolina and Ohio. Ohio can do nothing becasue its NC that issued the block but I find they are both part of a great multi-state group that cooperate in tracking down us nasty, criminal types.

At the NC Bureau of Motor Vehicles (after taking 2 days to get through, tells me my crime seems to be a................are you ready.......................a stop sign violation from.............wait for it.......................June, 1985!

The nice lady tells me they need a "purge letter" from Mecklenberg County (Charlotte) and gives me a phone number for the county BMV. I call them and after spending several hours getting through, I'm given a Citation number and told that I have to talk to the DA's office "to get a purge letter." When I finally get through to them, I find they will not talk to me unless I leave a detailed message explaining why I should. I did/   Three days later they return my call and the girl who will not give me her name (because they don't do that) tells me to send them a detailed fax. I do. 2 weeks later I've heard nothing and repeat the preceding process and am told they have no fax from me and I should refax them. I told her I had a copy that said it went through but she said I should refax and also send a snail mail. BTW, they will not respond directly by fax or e-mail.....only by snail mail.

I'm going to stop the details here as it became a joke with more of the same conversations and some getting raw on my end. From the outset I said that frankly I didn't remember getting such a ticket there but it was possible and in any case I would be happy to pay a fine now just to get this cleared up. I was told by everyone I talked with that it was not acceptable and the DA would dismiss the charge after they had the info. 'Course, THAT cocksucker had been out of town at some kind of DA bullshit and no one knew if the info was on his desk or not......but I should refax another time and snail mail another time............................Two months go by and and after more calls and crap, I am notified the purge letter has been issued.

I was told by several people there that they are working on this stuff every day and the back up/log jam is a serious problem.

WHAT?????

Why the fuck would you log all this stupid shit into a computer to begin with? Interestingly enough, I have run across THREE other poor souls who ran into trouble with this system. None of them did anything more major than a traffic violation and none wound up paying a dime except for all the screwing around involved.

I remember when the computers began tracking deadbeat dads but I think we have gone over the edge at this point.

Jeez...another scofflaw who thinks that when the law finally catches up with him, they're picking on him and he don't deserve it...

Honest to god, running a stop sign in 1985? I don't know if you could make people buy this as an episode in a satire. I wonder how many people had to lose their minds at once just to set this one in motion, let alone keeping up the ongoing fiasco.

Are you sure it was 1985 and not Nineteen, Eighty-Four!

Are there no statute of limitations on a traffic fine that is 25 freakin' years old even if you had not paid it? The insanity of it all.

1985.......I wasn't even marries back then.....had yet to meet Karen. I was in the process of breaking up a business venture gone sour so It is probably true since I was there in NC at the time that I did get a ticket but I swear to you I din't remember it at all. Even so, I offered to pay it but they didn't want the money! They just wanted to clear the case.

Why? Makes no sense to me and the cost of all this is just wasted money. Truth once again is stranger and less believable than fiction..............

From out hyar in The West, you sound like one of them there outlaw desperadoes. First it's runnin' stop signs and the next thing ya know you'll be rustling cattle, stealing horses an' chickens, and robbin' stages and jumpin' claims. You jist TRY to git a driver's license in Idaho!

Wait. MY license is up for renewal in February and I never got a notice that the ticket for "failure to renew" was taken care of! Oh, shit....

The clever politician or county or state manager of these things would have realized that entering items you don't intend to pursue into a computer is folly. Doesn't anyone own a shredder back there?

I had a ticket in a large east coast city one time that I didn't pay because it was such an insult. I had just realized my vehicle had been broken into, I had to quick secure it, find a place to park it (alternate side of the street parking), and it seems my bumper was about three inches into a cross walk. They sent out statements to another state in which I had resided, but finally I think we threw them off the trail. Told the friend who was forwarding my mail NOT to write "Forward to so-and-so" on the envelope or I couldn't return it "addressee unknown." So she put my mail in big manila envelopes for a while and mailed it and when the next one came we managed to head it off.

Okay. Makes me a scofflaw. I hope I've changed states enough by now that they don't figure this all out. :)

Here is the dope.......DLC

Note that this was originally meant for only serious problems. I don't think they had stop sign tickets in mind. Almost all states particpate but some, like NC, seem to have gone off the deep end in what they put in the system.

Hell, they kept me from buying groceries last month because I spat on the sidewalk in 1964. Took me three weeks to clear it up and I lost 5 pounds.

Well, not really. Spaw, you need to go on a talk show. Write to Oprah, Sally Jessie, or Ellen DeGeneres or Danny Bonaduce. You might wangle a free trip to New York out of it, anyway.

Stop signs? Ya mean you are supposed to stop? Hell, here in New Mexico it just substitutes for a Yield sign.

Coulda been worse, Spaw. It could have been an old speeding ticket in Virginia.

That's a hanging offence. Soon as you called about it, they would have started extradition proceedings.

Spaw, however, might be propelled southward at about Warp 10, causing thousands of panicked UFO reports to be called in, and end up stuck headfirst in the side of a mountain somewhere down in central Mexico.

That sort of mess is all to common!! When my brother was in Kansas, trying to sell my Mother's house about 15 years ago, he called and said there was a lien on the house over unpaid property taxes of 4 cars owned by my ex-wife! ONE of those cars was a 1975 VW Rabbit that we had owned together....15 years before!~!!!! When it died, she just parked to behind the house and let it rust and ignored notices..for 15 years.
Now I managed to convince them that I had never even SEEN those other 3 cars, but since my name was on the title of the VW, my MOTHER'S house was hostage. As you might guess, I paid a couple hundred rather than to hold up the sale by tracking down and arguing with ex-wife....THEY could not be bothered locating her...right in the same town... and getting her to deal with HER taxes....

ah, well....

I'm not a lawyer but I think that the statute of limitations applies to the time between the offense and its adjudication.

If I tell a cop I smoked a joint thirty years ago he can't arrest me for it.

Once the perp has been found guilty, as I assume was the case here, s/he has to pay the penalty unless pardoned, there's no time limit that I'm aware of; in fact, dodging the penalty could and usually does increase its severity until an arrest warrant is issued, but the exact procedure could vary with the jurisdiction.
