Mary from Grimsby Folk club sent this e-amil. Hello everyone, "Write a Lincolnshire Folk Song Competition" is back after an enforced absence the competion is back sponsored by Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire , and was launched yesterday at the event at Leadenham - it was a great day for those of you who missed it. I have application forms if any one wants them, they will be at the club in September. Details all entries to be received by October 22nd sent to Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire The Old School House Cameron St Heckington Sleaford Lincs NG 34 9RW Short listed songs will be performed and the winners chosen at a special concert Spilsby Theatre Thursday November 25th 2010, the 10 shortlisted songs will be recorded by BBC Radio Lincolnshire for Broadcast To comply with the spirit of the event the song must be new and must not have appreared previously on commercial available recording and must be under 4 mins long. for full rules of the competition, pick up an entry form. Well done to all those influential in getting it up and running again. Is there any rule saying whether you can put the song up online before the competition. I would like to put ours on our myspace as a lot of local people in our town gave us their memories to help us write our song. I'd like them to be able to have a listen but I don't want to do that if it is not 'allowed' before the end of the competition. Does anyone know if we can? |

What Sooz says is correct - get out there to any singaround etc and perform it - that is allowed. |

Have they published their criteria as guidance for would-be entrants? Or are all songs deemed to be folksongs if they have been entered? It's not that kind of thread. What the competition is called isn't an issue. It's a highly enjoyable annual (almost) event which gives a lot of people a great deal of pleasure, and a lot of mostly unknown writers a chance to air their talents. Please stop trolling, and go away and start your war somewhere else. |

I always supported it as best I could by entering, writing something, driving over from near Nottingham to Spilsby for the final. Doubt if I'll make it all the way from Dorset, Apparently i used to piss the judges off by writing songs longer than 4 minutes - so be warned! Not that I wrote twenty minute epic ballads or anything. But last time I entered, they preferred songs that people hadn't bothered rehearsing, but had scrawled hastily on the back of an envelope, which they read from onstage. Dunno what happened with any of the other songs that year eventually - although I remember the winning song pissed off some people in Louth - glorifying a barmaid who gave away drinks or something. This outraged her employers who had paid for the drinks she gave away - there was some kerfuffle like that. I don't remember the exact details - perhaps someone would refresh my memory. I remember Sue dewsbury used to a very good song about ploughing - a product of that comp. How many miles an acre? My best effort is still on the Skegness website - although an American judge said did I realise I had written two songs in one? http://www.visittheseaside.com/Events/ No - still sounds like just the one song to me. I remember also Skegness Council contacted me and said, would I mind inserting the couplte Its a good idea To go on the pier so I did. lets hope it worked and it got more people on the pier - though somehow one doubts it! If you get a invitation, go - just to experience the old courthouse in Spilsby - which is now a little theatre. although the dressing rooms are still very much cell like. |

23 Oct 10 - 07:02 AM (#3013598) Subject: RE: Lincolnshire FolkSong Comp 2010 UK From: Arthur_itus Well Greg, what Mary said, who is one of the judges, was "Write a Lincolnshire Folk Song Competition" All song entries are listened to and they finally come to the 10 shortlisted songs, which are sung live on the Finals night. Above all, there is great emphasis on the lyrics rather than the tune. That is what the judges look at. The songwriter does not have to sing the song and can ask another person to do it for them. The person singing the song can win an award for the best interpreter of the song, on the night. The Judges are people involved in folk based music. Maybe Sooz, who has also been a judge in her time, might know if that is still roughly the way it works. Whatever, it is an excellent evening and anybody in the top ten can be proud of themselves. For those who don't make it into the top 10, it can be very disapointing. |

Mind you I hadn't read the article in the folk magazine I had no knowledge of,by some welsh bloke I didn't know, who sort of said what he thought the best subjects would be. I only know all this because I saw him hand over the award for a song that followed his idea about what the song subject should be. It was a very good song and very well performed BTW. |

The judges are looking for a song with a definite Lincolnshire theme first of all, then obviously their personal likes and dislikes come into play. They use a voting system to decide on the winner and it can take a very long time to thrash out the final details! I have to say that my experience has been that it really is a non-competitive event for everyone who reaches the final. Finals night is most enjoyable for the participants and the audience alike. BTW there hasn't been a competition for the last two years since the BBC banned competitions. (So why is Strictly Come Boring still on TV?) |

Theres a chip shop to die for in Spilsby: the bar of the theatre is in the judges old robing rooms,; theres great craic with all the musicians; Batemans ales; a travel lodge down the road in Boston. I've all kinds of weird shit in the final - people with sequencers and synths; care in the community types; John Denver clones going on about the green fields of Lincolnshire; the 'I knew Peter Bellamy and he would have liked me' brigade. All human life. the judges are quite unaccountable - never having let me won. but they can't fuck up what is a great night. |

I was surprised and very pleased at the result - as usual, there were lots of good songs, and very good performers. Nice to see some familiar faces and good to see this fine event re-established. Sue, despite Tom's assertion, I didn't drive back straight away - Mary won't let me do that any more. It would have been better if I had, then I wouldn't have decided to avoid the M25 by using the M40 instead of the A1/M1, and so I wouldn't have spent that extra 3+ hours in a traffic jam! Ah well, I'm home now... John, I'm delighted to hear that you sing 'Hearts of oak...', makes me feel a bit like a real songwriter... Arthur, 'gallopers' is another name for the traditional fairground carousel with the horses etc - the song was on a fairground theme, triggered by the discovery that there's a company (John H Rundle Ltd) near Boston that still builds and restores these rides.
