Bob Dylan and the Beats
An excerpt from the forthcoming book "Bob Dylan in America," by the historian Sean Wilentz, about a lyrical bond that changed American culture.

Refresh.

Anyone who was raised in the period when Dylan's voice was just beginning may remember the high mad poetry of Alan Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso and others of the Beat generation. It is interesting that to a certain degree Dylan was weaned on these voices as well, in addition to his well-known draw on Woody Guthrie, and the contrast between Woody and Ginsburg certainly shows up in some of Dylan's outpourings.
