Lyr Add: My Best Girl (and similar titles)

In this thread a requestor back in 2002 asked for a song called (she thought) MY BEST GIRL, which her grandmother sang to her mother as a lullaby (although I doubt that it was written as a lullaby). I went looking for this song among my usual sources of sheet music, and I don't think I found it, but I did find several songs called MY BEST GIRL, or that use that phrase as part of the title. I thought it best to report my findings in a new thread.

MY BEST GIRL
Walter Donaldson
New York & Detroit: Jerome H. Remick & Co., 1924.

1. I've got a pal.
He's got a gal,
Ev'rything a little gal should be.
Oh, how he raves!
How he behaves,
Just a little lovesick, I can see.
He doesn't see her ev'ry day,
But if she passes by, you'll hear him say:

CHORUS: There she goes on her toes,
All dressed up in her Sunday clothes—
My best girl.
Just like Sweet Rosie O'Grady,
She's just a sweet little lady.
Calls me up now and then.
Calls me down only when
I'm too smart.
Since we've been acquainted,
The church is newly painted.
I guess the preacher was wise from the start.
What a pal!
What a gal!
Just as sweet as Frivolous Sal—
My best girl.

2. I like my pal.
I like his gal,
And I like the way she sings his song:
"Nobody knows.
Nobody cares
Just how I seem to get along,
But maybe I could smile someday."
Oh, gee! I'd love to let you hear me say:— CHORUS

"Sung nightly with immense success by the celebrated baritone Lloyd Wilson, with Hoyt's 'A Trip to Chinatown'"
SHE'S MY BEST GIRL
John St. George
Boston: White-Smith Music Pub. Co., 1893.

1. In yonder cottage by the sea,
Dwells my best girl.
Bright and handsome as can be
Is my best girl.
I call on her ev'ry Sunday eve. She greets me with a smile.
When Cupid lurks and softly lies in ambush in angel's guise.

CHORUS: She's my best girl, don't you know?
Soon we'll marry. I love her so!
When the wedding bells they ring,
When the bridal song we sing,
All the hours will pleasure bring.
She's my best girl.

2. While singing, dancing all day long,
With my best girl,
Sweet as flowers on the lawn,
Is my best girl.
My heart with joy is overflow'd. My love she holds the key.
The wedding bells you'll hear at dawn. How happy then we will be!

Not as kinky as the title sounds--

I'M IN LOVE WITH THE MOTHER OF MY BEST GIRL
Words, Gus Kahn. Music, Egbert Van Alstyne.
New York & Detroit: Jerome H. Remick & Co., 1913.

1. I've a secret I would like to tell to you,
Only you,
Just to you.
It's about a girl with tender eyes of blue.
Her love for me is fond and true.
Tho' we hug and kiss, we've never been engaged,
She and I,
She and I.
For I've been told
That I'm too old,
And here's another reason why:

CHORUS: I'm in love with the mother of my best girl.
Her mother is in love with me.
Of course I love the girl,
This sweet and precious pearl.
Still, her mother's kisses set my heart awhirl.
If I had to choose between the two I love,
I'd lead a most unhappy life,
For the girl, you see,
Is only three,
And the mother of my girl's my wife.

2. Sometimes with my little girlie on my knee,
In my dreams,
Idle dreams,
Comes a lover bold to steal her heart from me,
And she's forgotten me, it seems.
It may bring me pain to think she may forget,
But I know,
Yes, I know,
Her mother dear,
Will still be near.
I'll always be her one best beau.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LAND OF MY BEST GIRL (Harry Carroll)
From: Jim Dixon

Not a love song—I guess you could classify this as an antiwar song. At any rate, its point of view is unique in my experience: not so much dwelling on the horrors of war, as on the difficulty of taking sides:

(THE FATHERLAND, THE MOTHERLAND) THE LAND OF MY BEST GIRL.
Words, Ballard Macdonald. Music, Harry Carroll.
New York: Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., 1914.

1. I'm blue thru and thru,
And I don't know what to do.
In my heart a battle's raging,
All my sympathies engaging.
My mother comes from sunny France; my daddy, from Berlin;
And just across the Channel lies the land my girl lives in.

CHORUS: There's the Fatherland, the Motherland,
And the land of my best girl.
They're all calling me,
And I love the three,
But make up my mind, I can't,
For in my heart's a triple entente
That beats for one, and beats for all,
Till my poor head's awhirl
Over the Fatherland, the Motherland,
And the land of my best girl.

2. By day and by night,
All the allies rage their fight,
'Gainst my heart their forces sending,
Gen'ral Love its fort defending.
On one side waves red, white and blue; on one, red, white and black;
And yet another side displays the proud old "Union Jack."
