Max in South Wales - Mudgather! 31 August 2010

18 Aug 10 - 11:18 AM (#2967884)
Subject: Max in South Wales - Mudgather!
From: Anne Lister

I'll try to back this up with emails to those Mudcatters locally that I have email addresses for - but the plan is that we will meet Max from Newport train station on Sunday 29th August and bring him back to our home here in Pontypool.
On the Monday we'll both be working at Llancaiach Fawr, and although I'm sure Max would find that interesting for a while I'm not sure he'd want to spend all day there. So any Mudcatter who would like to offer their services as a tour guide - you could either come here to pick him up or come to Llancaiach (and return him to us either here after 5.45 pm or there before 5 pm). On the Tuesday I'm happy to show off some local stuff ... BUT IN THE EVENING we'll be hosting a Mudgather.
My thoughts for this is that we can have a barbecue (hoping the weather is kind to us) - if all of you intending to come can bring something to sling on the barbecue as well as something to drink then I'll provide salads and jacket spuds etc, and probably some desserts.
If you're reading this and you're in South Wales on Tuesday 31st August (or close enough to come to Pontypool, so this includes Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Hereford etc) let me know if you're intending to come. If you'd like directions, you'll need to send me a pm with your regular email.
Should be fun!
And after our experiences hosting Cllr's friends recently, it'd be great if someone could bring a bottle of Penderyn whisky or some Merlyn, to give a true taste of Wales!

Great shame - I live in South Wales but work in London, so I can't make it. But say hello from me and thanks for all the good work.

Are you thinking of taking him as far as the Gower? Or Brecon Beacons?

Pavance, he'll be transferred to the Gower after the Mudgather to stay with CraneDriver & SussexCarole for a day or so before returning to London. Have you noticed there's a London session for Max on Thursday Sept 2nd? It's at the Black Lion in Plaistow and there's a thread about it somewhere....

Might well make it to the Beacons on Tuesday morning (it's not far from here) or if someone is picking him up from Llancaiach it'd be even easier.

I'm happy to do the Monday with Max, Anne. I'll come to Llancaiach Fawr at a time to suit.

What do you fancy Max? Down a coal mine at Big Pit? More Welsh heritage at St Fagan's? Mountain scenery? Coastal scenery? I can't offer Welsh Blues though.

I'm working in Crickhowell that evening, so if I can hang around for a cuppa for an hour or so at tea time (food at the gig, so no feeding worries).

I announced the Mudgather at Llantrisant last night, and have notified Frank Hennessy.

Cheers

Splott Man

Guest Andrew: Max is coming over from the USA on his first trip to the UK, being passed from pillar to post by us MudCatters. As pavane says, he's the founder and owner of MudCat which started off rooted in Blues which is his first love, and he's a great player too. Hope you can get along to the MudGather, if you don't know where Anne Lister is based and need directions, check her website!

I'll be down from Scotland on the Pembrokeshire coast that week. What's the nearest Max is likely to be staying/visiting? Probably still a little far away I suspect!

hi Zen,

Nearest to Pembrokeshire would be ourselves on the Gower peninsula.

See our website here

But we'll be taking Max to Llantrisant Folk Club Wednesday night and he's leaving Thursday, so unless you can join us during the day, which you're very welcome to do, I fear that won't be much help.

Hmmmmm - planning is probably a bit strong. Depends on the weather, for one thing. Depends on when we wake up after getting back from the Mudgather. Probably a late breakfast is on the cards, followed by visits to some of Gower's more scenic locations - no time to do 'em all! You're very welcome to join us - give us a ring (number is on website) and we'll work something out.

Hmm..I don't think peace will describe our evening at Llantrisant on Wednesday!

We are so looking forward to welcoming Max to peaceful Gower and reminding him how much Mudcat has added to our lives! So many friends (and a husband) I have met through my time on Mudcat.

We'll show Max the smugglers bays here and perhaps we'll sing him the song...does he do D minor??

Photos were taken (not by me). Register was completed, book was written in. A good time was had by all (although the cat fled from the room). The barbecue was a bad plan as it didn't get to cooking heat quickly enough and we had loads of food to cook on it, so I finished up slaving over a hot grill .... but that was the only downside to the whole thing.
Max is now en route with Carole and Andrew ... and has left his dongle here. I'll see if I can think of an easy way to return it to him ... any thoughts?

I don't think it's internet access - I think it's a memory stick dongle. We won't be able to get to Llantrisant ourselves and I don't know if anyone else from round here is likely to be going - do you think I should put it in the post and if so, to whom? To you, MGAS, or to Micca?

Dongle problem has been resolved & should be reunited with Max as soon as Royal Mail get it to us. It used to be that if you left something at a friend's house, it meant that you were planning to return to collect it someday! I'm certain there's something in that...

Not unless they mug the Post Office workers, Kitty! Not sure where we would have found Andy and Jillie, mind.
As I write this, Carole, Andrew and Max are at Llantrisant folk club, but the dongle is en route for MGAS via the post. It seemed the easiest solution, all things considered. And Max is fully informed, too.

A wonderful evening at Llantrisant Folk Club! Thanks for all that you have achieved, Max, and may your servers never fail! Thanks again, Andy and Carole, for looking after the main man. Everyone including you, Max - performed brilliantly, but the icing on the cake was definitely Ross Couper, the Shetland fiddle magician. And THAT's the reason why I love folk clubs and the Mudcat!
