Mentioned on my recent thread about "I Never Go To Work", which I learnt in London about 1956-58, were John Hasted*, Martin Winsor*, Redd Sullivan*, Sandy Paton*. All these were friends, or at least close acquaintances. Others I recall from the same time were Shirley Collins, Stan Kelly, Dominic Behan*, Robin Hall*, Peggy Seeger, Jimmy McGregor, Nancy Whiskey*, Henry Morris, Isabel Sutherland, Paul Carter, Steve Benbow, Russell Quaye, Hilda Syms, Jenny Leathers, Karl Dallas, Tom Paley, Eric Winter*, Gina Glazer, Isla Cameron*... (I left London in early=60s and only caught up with next, Carthy/Bellamy, generation in 70s). There were probably others I have forgotten or overlooked, but these are the ones who come to mind at this precise moment. Those marked with *s are ones I know to be dead. Some {Shirley, Stan...} are still prominent on the Scene, I think. Anyone know anything else about any of the others? ~Michael~ |

I knew Guy Carawan & Jack Elliott but not well ~ tho knew Dean Gitter & Ralph Rinzler more, & should probably have included them. I recall being among a group invited home for a drink after a session by Ralph & being astounded to find myself in a suite at the Dorchester, Park Lane!, which makes me now think of Benny Hill's song about the folksinger from America and the brand new Rolls Royce car ... I think Enoch Kent was still in Glasgow ~~ Robin used to talk of him, but I don't remember ever meeting him. Didn't know the Youngs at all ~ their name quite new to me. I think Derroll Adams came over a few years later. ~Michael~ |

There were Gordon McCulloch who is still with us and Bobby Campbell who is not. They had a band called The Exiles with Enoch Kent. There were Charles McDevitt and Pete Stanley who I last saw at Steve Benbow's funeral (a very uplifting humanist affair) as well as Diz Disley who has, in the meantime, dropped off the mortal coil. And then there was Alex Campbell. |
