Good luck to you, skarpi. The world economy is pretty much in the tank, and Iceland, I guess, has been hit probably harder than anywhere else.

We here know you will persevere and come out well on the other end, and may it be sooner than later.

Think about it this way... Most evryone, with exception to the upper 5% who represent the new money hoarderinf class, is one major illness or one jog loss away from bankruptcy... It's the new economic world order where Boss Hog can extarct the most out of us by keepin' us in fear that we might loose everything if we step outta line fir just one minutes...

Sorry that you have become a victim, Skarpz, of the scheme...

Best of luck... Hey, it will pass...

You'll get there again, Skarpi..you'll get there...

And look on the bright side, you can now eat LOADS of chocolate to put those pounds back on again...

I've got a good friend of mine who's in the same position, she's about to go bankrupt any minute...But the worst part is that bit..Once you're through that, it's up from then on...bit by bit, step by step...

Bobert, you have it so right..The New World Order...but, did they take into account The New World Anger, I wonder? Over on Facebook it's growing on a daily basis...

skarpi my dear friend. I have no words. Only my feelings of sadness that this has happened to you. You are a good man, in all respects and I have enjoyed our friendship from the first post.

I know you will get through this. I just know you will be okay.

Bless.

Skarpi,
I just learned of a couple from Utah living in Maine in a car with their five schildren. Long, sad story. He is an engineer but can't find work. From middle class to homeless in about six months.
Hang on to your loved ones, This will pas, I promise. I have seen it too often not to know it will pass.

My dear friend. I know so many people this happened to. The economy of the world is just nuts anymore. But I will tell you this. It is impossible to keep a good person and a person as smart as you down for long. You will re-group .. you will come back with a plan stronger. And it will work for you. That I have also seen many times .. Life will not keep good people down for long .. they bend, they don't break. Everything happens for a reason .. this one seems to suck right now but I am sure it will be fine .. I am sure of it

Engineering work is down all over North America. The "global" companies have established "offices" in cities like mine which have two local and licensed engineers owning a franchise type operation. They bid on jobs cheap and the engineering is done at the head office... maybe Toronto, maybe Barbados, maybe Delhi, etc.

I am looking at other avenues myself. As an engineer with a Master's Degree, I may be a greeter at Walmart because I fit the profile. Or move to China where Walmart begins. Maybe I could work for the Chinese here after they buy the country... they are in the process of buying it.

Still, I am far better off than skarpi... for now.

I've messed with the words a bit, Skarpi:

Come all brother tradesmen that travel along;
Oh, pray come and tell me where the trade is all gone.
Long time I have traveled and cannot find none,
And it's,

Cho: Oh, the hard times of Old Iceland,
In Old Iceland very hard times.

Provisions you buy at the shop, it is true,
But, if you've no money, there's none there for you.
So, what's a poor man and his family to do?
And it's,

If you go to a shop and you ask for a job,
They will answer you there with a shake and a nod;
So, that's enough to make a man turn out and rob.
And it's,

You will see the poor tradesman a-walking the street
From morning till night, for employment to seek,
And scarcely they've got any shoes to their feet.
And it's,

And now to conclude and to finish my song,
Let us hope that these hard times they will not last long;
I hope soon to have occasion to alter my song.
And it's,
Oh, the good times of Old Iceland,
In Old Ice-ah-land jolly good times.

Skarpi, you will be sleeping right again soon. The person you would not want to be is one of those bankers, who stole all the loot and never had to put anything back. The best things about you are the ones, which no one can take away.

From: Rob Naylor

Hey, Skarpi!

I didn't *actually* officially go bankrupt, but I did end up in huge debt which took me years to clear.

I had my own company with 8 employees. We had a downturn. Stupidly, I increased the overdraft with the bank secured on my home and tried to keep the business going. For almost 2 years I took nothing out of the business but lived on what we'd put by, and kept all the employees on, hoping for an improvement. It never happened and eventually I had to close the company and triple my mortgage to cover the secure overdraft on the business.

Then I worked out of my spare bedroom for 2 years, barely keeping head above water, but the bank tried to force me to change my *personal* overdraft to a loan at much less favourable rates. I had a big argument with the manager who I accused (correctly) of not wanting to help me, but purely to meet her quarterly target for selling loans. There's a long story to follow, but out of spite the bank got a Court Judgement against me for the overdraft. They didn't need to...I paid off the balance 3 days after the Judgement, but the bank had been inflexible about delaying the case.

Upshot (and this was deliberate from the bank manager) was that my credit rating was destroyed, my credit cards were, one after the other, called in and cancelled, I wasn't able to get normal credit anywhere, could only get a "cash account" at a bank and the only credit card I could obtain was for a very low limit at a very high interest.

For 4 years after that we lived hand to mouth. Almost no social life. Minimal spending on anything. No new clothes. Shopping the hour before the supermarket closed to get the items that were going out of date at a big discount, etc. I had to sell almost all of the optical instruemnts I'd collected over the previous 20 years, and most of the old books I'd collected, sometimes literally so that I could put fuel in the car to visit a client, and a couple of times to make sure we paid *something* off the mortgage. Rebuilding a business with no loans or overdraft and expanding purely using profits was a struggle.

BUT, two years ago my co-shareholders and I sold out our carefully built new business to a multinational. As the smallest shareholder, I didn't make a mint of money, but I made enough to put us approximately back in the position we'd been in before the first company went down.

It took 6 years after the first company collapse to get to the point where we could, eg, go out for a meal in a restaurant, or take a vacation. In the first 4 years I had a total of 16 days holiday (that's over 4 years, not per year) and worked most weekends. BUT..........WE GOT BACK ON OUT FEET, which is the whole moral of this story.

The months after my first company collapsed I was in total despair. I just didn't see how we were ever going to get out of the situation. It was the blackest period of my life. I felt like giving up several times, BUT WE CAME THROUGH IT.

So don't give up, don't EVER give up...you CAN and WILL rebuild your life! Good luck!
