Tune Add: dacw fuwch - Welsh dance tune

Guest LDT asked to hear a MIDI for Dacw Fuwch! (Look, a cow!). I have asked Joe to post it here. If Joe is available, it should appear soon. You will hear the tune itself, then a delectable chiming of cowbells, then the tune again with harmony.

The original was 14 measures long, with a pick-up note of one-eighth note out front. Don't ask me why it's not the standard 16 measures. Probably the cow was spotted by a small child on a train and it went by really fast.

Here are the chords. Note that the same notes may have different chords the second time.

1. Pick-up note. One eighth, no chord
2. G
3. G
3. C - D (but I prefer Am)
4. G
5. Em
6. Bm
7. Am - D
======
8. G
9. C
10.G
11.C
12.D
13.Am - D
14.G

No repeats are shown. Source: a friend of mine brought it home from a workshop in 1994. Probably Welsh Heritage Week. It's a photocopy from a publication, not a hand-written piece.

leeneia2 - Sounds lovely. Catchy too. Thanks for sharing it.
I like tunes with interesting titles. I've always wanted to write one called beans on toast.

There is a children's song to it:

Dacw, dacw fuwch, ac arni gyrnau gleision,
Nid am y fuwch 'rwy' bron a^ thorri 'nghalon,
Ond am y ferch, lle roddais i fy serch,
A welais i yn ei godro.

Dacw, dacw stwc, ac arni gylchau gloywon
Nid am y stwc, 'rwy' bron a^ thorri 'nghalon, ...
Ond am y ferch, lle roddais i fy serch,
A welais i yn ei chario.

Dacw, dacw rw^m, a'i llond o lestri ddigon
Nid am y rw^m, 'rwy' bron a^ thorri 'nghalon ...
Ond am y ferch, lle roddais i fy serch,
A welais i'n eistedd yno.

Roughly:
There, there is a cow with blue horns
But it isn't for the cow that my heart is breaking
But for the girl to whom I gave my love
Who I saw milking it.

There, there is the pail with shiny rings,
Buy it isn'f for the pail that my heart is breaking
But for the girl to whom I gave my love
Who I saw carrying it.

There, there is the room full enough of dishes,
But it isn't for the room that my heart is breaking
But for the girl to whom I gave my love
Who I saw sitting there.

The tune is often used in a set with another - "Robin Ddiog" (Lazy Robin) - for a dance of that name.

Robin Ddiog
Double circle. Couples facing couples. Man with partner on his right. One couple facing clockwise; the other, counter clockwise.

1. Right hand star and left hand star.
2. First couple (facing clockwise) form a bridge and walk 4 paces ahead while second couple walk 4 paces ahead under bridge counter clockwise. Couples turn, couple two makes the bridge and one proceed under it. Turn again a third time but this time progress to meet couple from the next foursome.
3. Repeat

Pretty basic dance which probably has other names elsewhere. Standard twmpath dance for a) children b) clueless grown-ups.

I left-clicked on the link above and got a message that there was not enough available memory to play the tune. Now that's a little odd, since the tune was notated on, and is stored,on this very computer.

But not to worry. I right-clicked and it worked fine. So if anybody else has this problem, right-click on the link above to hear the tune.

The cowbell sound is not part of the original tune. It's just in there to mark the end of the first run-through.
