I remember quite a few years ago reading that it is the one thing that parental alcohol use will affect in fetal developement. I can't remember if it is just mom or both parents, either/or, who contribute to the phenomenon nor exactly how much alcohol must be involoved but supposedly the children of such parents have little or no indentation. This is a question you can answer for yourself, of course. If neither parent drank or drank moderately you should have a well defined philtrum. If you don't then the claim appears bogus. And vice versa. Without saying which is which, in my case, it's true. How about you? |

Do you mean that this is the only known indication in children who do not suffer from fetal alcohol syndrom? I would say I have pretty clear definition there; my parents were tee-totalers. But frankly this sounds suspect to me; I would be a bit surprised to see proof that there is such an effect short of alcohol consumption causing more extensive harm. |

I was told that the fact that the second and fourth fingers of my hands are almost even is a sign that I was exposed to testosterone in the womb, and is why I'm so very like my father sometimes. Since then, I've been looking at other women's hands. But I'd have no way of knowing if the testosterone thing is true. |

Independent studies (well, at least one) has shown it to be amazingly accurate, I believe the term they used was "more accurate than the Encyclopaedia Brittanica" for the terms they looked up. Where it's likely to go wrong are on issues that are hotly debated, especially political ones, where each "side" will edit the last edit to turn it back to their point of view. I have criticised the article, and suggested something better. The something better, in this case, being an article without that dreadful picture and the "mental retardation" stuff. So what you want is an article that agrees with your point of view, and damned be the actual medical evidence? |

I was drawing from memory of an actual study that probably took place in the mid to late 70's (that alone may make it suspect!). I also remember reading that folks with more than three creases in their earlobe (right or left?) were 50% more lkely to have a heart attack than those without creases. Hmmm? You might just figure that folks with three or more creases in their earlobes are thirty to forty years older than folks without and therefor 50% mor likely to have a heart attack at any rate! For the same reason that scientists must duplicate the results of an experiment one should always have at least two different sources to confirm an assertion (appeal to populace?). Even the Mosaic law demands at least two witnesses to substantiate a charge! Just thought I'd throw out an interesting tid-bit from the long ago. I'd drink to that! And what's more some of you have now added the word "philtrum" to your vocabulary! |

That seems to me to be a better situation than just assertions in a printed encyclopedia or undocumented claims on some internet site. I see myriads of documentation and citations in this one.....and I assume there are many more qualified than I or anyone here to review & edit it. |
