Folk Music in Amsterdam

Can anyone tell me what the folk music scene is like in Amsterdam? I'm thinking of moving there for a while but I don't want to miss out on the vibrant scene! I suppose I could always set my own up - any tips? Thanks

I think this is your best starting point and you would then be able to find out about other places. It's a short walk from Rembrandsplein.

A friend of mine had a commission from the EC to write a piece of orchestral music about Amsterdam.
After many weeks of research, he came to the conclusion that the inhabitants had become so open and eclectic in accepting musical influences from all over the world, that they had lost any trace of their own musical roots.
Which was why he built the structure of the piece on the sound of the many chiming clocks in the city.

Many years ago there was a club called 'Folk Fairport' in Amsterdam, I have no idea if it still exists.

It tells you what to google for. Which will lead you to the link for the ABC Treehouse, which does still exist.

The ABC Treehouse may well still exist, but do their upcoming events of:

  • Lamrim Meditation with Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Namkhyen

  • How to Lose Weight and Feel Great!

  • Chinese Language Course

If you do move there be sure to pick up the local newspaper for Amsterdam. Usually if you look in the entertainment section for local music clubs it will have all the music going on that week or weekend. Hopefully the clubs that are listed will give you an idea if some of them have folk music. Then perhaps if you get yourself a good city map, you can try to find your way there on a bus or train.

I was there many, many years ago and went to a place called, Paradisio's (spelling I'm not sure of). Anyway, some nights they had rock music and some nights they had folk...........but this was long ago. Some years ago I heard they turned it into a dance club. Don't even know if it still exits but when I was very young I went there for the folk music in the summertime and it was really good!

Oh yes another source would be to buy the Magazine called, "Time Out Amsterdam." That is usually a good source for all types of events from music to art, movies, etc. Go to the music pages and look at each venue. There should be some music clubs that indicate they have folk music.

My impression, based solely on listening to local musicians on YouTube (which I do a lot), is that the Netherlands is a great place for music. Here's an example, which I think is actually in the Hague, but that's pretty close. If you search for names you see at that and subsequent pages, maybe together with the name of the city, it might lead you to videos shot in Amsterdam clubs.
