Hey, everyone I know that has been playin' a long time has accumulated quite a few musical instruments in every shape and form but... ... there's that #1 instrument that if you wre to be stranded on a dessert that you'd wnat to take with you... BTW, this isn't a "wish list" thread... I'm talkin' abou the one instrument that you now own that would be on that isalnd with you... And thank you for anyone willing to step to the plate here... I'd take my shabby old Savana banjo which, although old, was probably a POS when new and it is now too. But it's my 'throw in the van' instrument, I love playing it, and as I heard somewhere, "nothing wastes time like a 5 string banjo" Incidentally I'm in a very similar place to Jack Campin regarding the ud so I'll make that my No. 2. Looks like it might float nicely too... Pete. |
01 Sep 10 - 07:42 AM (#2977375) Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Midchuck I'm with Mandotim - Rainsong (or other carbon-fiber guitars) eliminate all worry about heat and humidity, and most worry about impact damage; and the difference in sound is only noticeable to an experienced ear in excellent listening conditions. Mine is the OM-1000, and when I play anywhere out of the house, 99 per cent of the time, it's the one I grab. IF the desert island had an air-conditioned house on it, though, I'd probably opt for the Huss & Dalton CM I picked up a couple of months ago. They make incredible instruments. Peter |

01 Sep 10 - 03:22 PM (#2977771) Subject: RE: Your #1 Instrument... No #2 or #3s... From: Joe Offer My #1 instrument? - my "D" harmonica. It's a Hohner Special 20, and I really love it. Can't say I'm much of a harmonica player, but somehow it always sounds good when I play along with people who are playing in "D." I just play chords that seem to fit and I noodle around a bit, and people seem to like it. I got forced into a solo on a break on a song the other day - and hey, it worked very well! My #2? - a Suzuki Folk Master in "G," also a very nice harmonica. #3? - well, I learned in fifth grade in the St. Rita School harmonica band on a Hohner Marine Band in "C," but it got gummed up and I never got it put back together after trying to clean it. I replaced it with a Hohner cheapie "American Ace" (made in China), but it was never the same. I don't have much use for "C" harmonicas, so I haven't bothered. Besides, I have a very nice Hohner chromatic harmonica in "C" that I haven't learned to play. I recently bought a Suzuki Folk Master in "A," but I rarely have found reason to use it. Folkies seem to sing mostly in "D". -Joe- |

The reasoning is that the search party would have more incentive than just looking for me! Seriously, I'd probably take my Meisterklasse Hohner "C" harmonica, on the chance that strings would be hard to get for most any instrument, and the only non-string instrument I play is the harmonica. The choice of the Meisterklasse over any of my 'normal' harps is because the aluminum comb (frame) is harder to damage than the plastic or wood ones of the Marine Bands / Special 20s / Lee Oskar harps that make up my "stock." And I might sneak a Dan Moi* into my luggage, since jews' harps aren't necessarily 'musical instruments,' and dan mois are almost unrecognizable as jews' harps anyway. The inspectors would never notice it. Bob Clayton Dan Moi * Vietnamese jews' harp made of brass, and the tongue slot is cut with a laser. Nifty, wonderful sound, and very portable. Played on the lips, not the teeth, as well. |
