07 Sep 10 - 04:31 AM (#2981402) Subject: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Rafflesbear Mick, the Landlord of the Seven Stars at Foots Cray is impressed by the benefits of having the Crayside Folk nights at his pub. Foots Cray is largely a commercial centre and pretty much shuts down in the evenings. He has no background in folk music but he is learning fast and comes down to listen. He has been very accommodating and the sessions have turned out to be popular. While talking to him about the folk day on October 9th he asked whether we thought there could be a demand for guest folk artists to appear there on Saturday evenings - the likes of Ron Trueman-Border and Don Thompson perhaps. If anyone would be seriously interested in turning up to such evenings if they were arranged (not necessarily every one of course), perhaps you could let us know so we can give him some feedback. It's easy to say yes and then not go, so please consider carefully before replying. Thanks |
07 Sep 10 - 11:28 AM (#2981595) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Girl Friday As I mentioned on the other thread, Don sand I will be organizing this. The initial plan will be to hold an open mic. session with as many local folkies who want to perform say, a 15 minute spot. Once established, we will look at booking guests. I know there's loads of you out there who will be interested, but we also need listeners. |

10 Sep 10 - 12:04 PM (#2983984) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Rafflesbear Hi GF Don said 1st week November but I suggested Oct 30 to avoid bonfire night and maintain the momentum from the Folk Day. He seemed to like that idea - are you out there Don? Rafflesbear |

11 Sep 10 - 06:23 PM (#2984762) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Girl Friday I had a singers night on November 5th, because of the whizz bangs, but Border Crossing have asked me to move their booking to then. Never mind the bangers ! |

13 Sep 10 - 10:33 AM (#2985721) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Girl Friday This is all very good, thanks to all of those who want a gig next year, HOWEVER! We need to establish the club first, and we can't do that without a few of you coming down to perform unpaid this year. That's the hard reality. We have a great venue, and enthusiastic landlord, but we need to keep him happy. The last thing Crayside needs is to lose the landlord's support, (and his money, as happened at The Fox and Hounds) |

15 Sep 10 - 03:08 PM (#2987436) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Girl Friday OK Here are some ground rules 1/ Absolutely no electronic keyboards 2/ No electric guitars (plugged in acoustic is ok) 3/ No jazz |

15 Sep 10 - 05:51 PM (#2987554) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Rafflesbear same principle throughout I guess, if the sound comes from a pickup it'll be no, if it's produced acoustically it'll be fine |
16 Sep 10 - 09:43 AM (#2987945) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Don(Wyziwyg)T I am indeed out here Richard, and in keeping with an E-Mail I sent to Sue and you, I would like to take issue with the no keyboards rule, which is, I'm afraid, a step too far. Are you really intending to bar the likes of Clive Lever, and indeed our duo "Sic Transit"? You know how much is added to a performance by his input. That, in my opinion, would be a shame, and a serious obstacle to booking some very good artists. Although there would be no case for drum kits, or full on electric guitars and basses, when using PA, acoustic guitars and mandolins with pick-ups would obviously be DI'd for the sake of balance, and keyboards ditto, putting volume control in the hands of the organiser. I would be reluctant to be organising, or performing, at a venue which excluded my musical partner. Don T. |
16 Sep 10 - 04:42 PM (#2988229) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Rafflesbear Perhaps "Keyboards by invitation only" would keep everyone happy? |
17 Sep 10 - 05:59 AM (#2988548) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: GUEST,Woodsie People will travel from afar to an open session where they can play/sing(as I do) but if it's apre-booked guest gig in a pub then you must aim for the local catchment area. Unless it is a really well known artist then apart from diehard fans not many are going to travel very far on a Saturday night. The landlord at The British Oak is OK with us publicising other sessions/folk clubs but not happy to publicise Saturday gigs at other pubs - as he puts on live (excellent) music on Saturdays himself. |
17 Sep 10 - 06:19 AM (#2988558) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Rafflesbear As I understand it the intention is to start out with open mic then try occasional guests for part of the evening once the session is established My original thoughts were that Mick wanted to develop a mainly local audience that could rub off on to other nights of the week. But success is success and if open mic pulls people in then I'm up for it |
17 Sep 10 - 06:43 AM (#2988568) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: GUEST,Woodsie We will be there for the open mic! |
17 Sep 10 - 10:29 AM (#2988680) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Girl Friday I have apologised to Don re the keyboard thing, having completely overlooked his mate (and mine )Clive. So it is keyboards by invitation. Think we should wait and see what turns up on the night. There has been further interest in the open mic. idea. I agree with Woodsie here. We may only book guests that we like, and would go and see, but they may not be right for the locals. If we can offer the ideal mix, all should be well. |
17 Sep 10 - 03:06 PM (#2988862) Subject: RE: Saturday evening venue for Sidcup, Kent? From: Rafflesbear So far the locals have responded remarkably well to the Monday mix. It is possible the Saturday crowd is different but more of the same seems a reasonable starting point |
