BS: A Thought (protecting mosques)

September 11, 2002, my friend Liam spent the night sitting in his car outside the local Islamic center, keeping watch.

As Hollowfox will tell you, Liam is a jackass. But even jackasses have their moments of wisdom.

I am asking people to sit outside their local mosque, Islamic center, or whatever, on the night of September 11. Keep your cell phone handy, in case creeps come around. But most likely they won't. The kind of people who would fire bomb a mosque, or just spray paint someting vile on the walls are cowards. They'll leave if they see there are witnesses.

Pass this along to your favorite web pages. It's time we said Muslims are Americans too.

Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson said that Muslims should enjoy the same religious liberty in this country as Christians and Jews. You want to argue with them? Or take a stand.

Great idea, LadyJean.

Everybody, pass it on!

Good idea, LadyJean.

So far as I know, Juneau doesn't have a mosque or an Islamist center of any kind, but I know we have at least a few Muslims. Juneau is a great place to live- for a small town we are a diverse community. I'm going to ask a journalist friend of mine here if there is a gathering place.

A few years ago after the local Jewish community had built a synagogue, someone - probably some kids - spray painted some anti-Semitic stuff on a wall out front. The community was outraged and we all converged on the spot and scrubbed it clean. So far as I know, no one was ever found who admitted to having done it.

Excellent idea. I have to work or I would love to do it. I took a potted plant to the nearest mosque on 9/12/2001 to say I didn't blame all Muslims (remember -- the indiscriminate discrimination was fomenting immediately after 9/11) and spent a fine half hour talking with a Muslim store owner who had come to the US 5 years previously from Afghanistan.

be careful you are not reported as a suspicious person if seen sitting around by a mosque. this might back fire if you do not communicate your intentions correctly. Probably best to do this as a group and communicate your support so your reasons for doing it are clear. good luck and thanks for offering your support.

Better yet, I'd say contact the mosque in advance and offer your services as a watcher. They might decline. They might have already organized another form of protection. You might inadvertently cause more trouble than you help.

I would think they'd be more likely to welcome help from an already organized group such as a church, than from an individual or an ad-hoc group.

Yes, we must each use our own best thinking in our own areas.

Thanks, folks.
