Tinker tailor soldier sailor

Heard a song the other day when in Suffolk - it was a variation on the Tinker Tailor soldier sailor rhyme and told of a time when the speaker/ singer was all these things - so the lyrics might have been something like, for example 'when i was your soldier... I fought your wars'. Melody line would be useful too.

Sounds like the song written and recorded by Dave Evardson. Also recorded by John Conolly.

Camping Nights and Roving Days

Tinker for your pots and kettes
Tailor for your finery
Soldier when I fought your battles
Sailor when I fished your sea
Rich man when you paid good money
Poor man when you passed me by
Beggar when my bairns went ragged
Thief when hunger made them cry

I'm the sun of no one special
Keep on moving is my name
Some place else is where i'm going
Disposessions whence I came
Settled people hold the powers
Make the laws to move me on
Buy my goods and use my labour
Come tomorrow i'll be gone

Tinker for your pots and kettes
Tailor for your finery
Soldier when I fought your battles
Sailor when I fished your sea
Rich man when you paid good money
Poor man when you passed me by
Beggar when my bairns went ragged
Thief when hunger made them cry

Weve been on the road for too long
Camping nights and roving days
Settled folk are wary of us
Strange to you our words and ways
Hard for us to keep on travelling
Harder still to settle down
Never hear a word of welcome
Were not wanted in your town

Tinker for your pots and kettes
Tailor for your finery
Soldier when I fought your battles
Sailor when I fished your sea

Rich man when you paid good money
Poor man when you passed me by
Beggar when my bairns went ragged
Thief when hunger made them cry

I have just typed that down listening to John Conolly's version. So it may differ slightly to the original by Dave Evardson.

The song is about a powerful plea on behalf of refugees, migrants and "travelling people" the world over.

I just love this song.

Blimey, I hope It's the one you meant

Just had a re-look at what I posted and made a few corrections.

Tailor for your finery

Sailor when I fished your sea
Rich man when you paid good money

Hia All

Have it on good authority from author that the posted lyrics are accurate.

Original recorded version available through website:

www.evardsongs.com

CD "A Ramble On The Viking Way"
Song "Camping Nights & Roving Days"

Please note Dave & Julie are going to Cyprus for 3 weeks from 19th Sept

Shay Black (Mary's brother) once showed an interest in the song but nothing came of it. Would be nice if other singers wanted to sing it.

Grimsby's Mark Campbell & Paul Bellamy also did a nice version (not recorded), but they don't perform together now.
