I'd like to mention our Second Welsh Session Weekend, to be held in the upper Tawe Valley, north of Swansea, on the last weekend of October. It's called 'Sha Nôl, Sha Mlân' and there's more info here: www.sesiwn.org In essence we've got Welsh Traditional Music sessions organised in local pubs, cafes and the Welfare Hall in Ystradgynlais and Ystalyfera. It's a great chance to play and learn Welsh tunes, and maybe to get to know another part of the world if you haven't been around here before. Last year's was the first and we had getting on for half-a-hundred msucians between every session. We're hoping for moe this year. And of course, you're welcome to come and listen too. We will some beginners' workshops in whistle, bodhran, mandolin and Welsh pipes, too. If you'd like to know more, have a look at the website or ask me! If anyone wants to chuck a quid or two in the pot to help out, that's great, but that's not compulsory. We want as many people, who'd like to learn, play and listen to Welsh Traditional Music, to be able to come as possible. If you fit into those categories, come over! Accommodation is also possible. A local cafe which has rooms has agreed to provide discounted beds(thanks, Merlins of Ystradgynlais!) and there are other options. If you'd like to know more, please contact me. Geraint |

Ahem. I was constantly amazed by the distances out in the US and Canada. It's a different world to Wales, certainly as far as the scale of the continent. But I digress. We're working on somewhere for campervans. I will keep you posted. There are some 'proper' campsites within a few miles, but none in Ystradgynlais itself. However, I was there last night (in the line of duty) and was told all will be fine for the end of October. Should anything happen, worry not - we'll decamp to the Legion or the Corner House or the Pig... :-) As a matter of interest, the other pub we're in on Friday night is the Wern Fawr, which has its own brewery and has won Champion Ale of Wales. They include whistle and bodhran for beginners; Welsh tuines for those who can already play; Welsh bagpipes and pibgorn; a slow session - Saturday afternoon and night there'll be sessions in Ystradgynlais Sunday middayish, a farewell session. There are sessions there on Sundays, I believe. There's another in the Mount in Thursday nights, which I very occasionally attend. Perhaps Bubblyrat knows more, I don't get up there very often. Anyway, there's a few of the Llanidloes Session regulars who're coming down to 'Sha Nôl'. :-) |

Karen and I went to Llanidloes for Martin Herbert's wedding recently ; we stayed in a "yurt" at Chapel Farm ( the wedding reception was in the chapel) and had a great time ,played music,met some great people ; we both already knew people who live there, ie Martin,naturally---Paul Hogben----Lesley-Anne Dupre--and I met & played with Cornelius. 'Sha Nôl, Sha Mlân' means 'Backwards and Forwards' in our local Welsh dialect. It's held on the weekend the clocks change, for one thing. It's also held in a few venues between Ystradgynlais and Ystalyfera. You could read more into it if you want... You don't need to be able to speak Welsh, but the music is going to be Welsh! There aren't that many Welsh Trad Sessions, even in Wales. We wanted to put on a session weekend which allowed musicians, who often don't get that much contact with each other, to play together and learn new tunes in a relaxed environment. We're doing some more workshops this year than last, in order to let people who don't have many of the tunes to have a bash at 'em. The local rugby club have agreed to let us put caravans and campervans on their premises in return for a few quid. Send me a pm if you'd like more details. We've got maybe half-a-dozen vehicles coming already, but there should be room for a few more. And yes, there are a few Llanidloes boys coming down, Cornelius amongst 'em. Very musical place, Llanidloes. |

The brewery is certainly still in existence, however. Andrew, do you know Roland Emmanuel? Plays with 'Roots and Galoots'? He'll be around for some of the weekend, I think. Incidentally, 'glaswellt' actually pretty much means 'blue grass' anyway. Glas in Welsh can be used for blue, green, even grey in different circumstances. I think the same is true of the Irish 'glas' too. :-) |

There's been a problem with the website for Bryncelyn Brewery. Thankfully this has not impaired their efforts as far as brewing is concerned - I can report that their new straw-coloured/pale-aleish bitter is well-worth sampling... You should all come over a fortnight tonight for beer and tunes :-) |

My mandolin skills aren't good enough to be playing Appalachian stuff with any fluency, I fear. Not sure how many bluegrass players will be over with us, but it'd be good to see you and teach you some Welsh tunes I've got a mate in North Carolina who does play Appalachian music, mind, he sends me some interesting links now and again. Regarding the Wern Fawr and its excellent range of home-brewed award-winning ales: The landlord is a real ale fan and Buddy Holly enthusiast, and he names his brews Holly Hops, Buddy Marvellous etc. A vanload of us RATS (the Real Ale Tasting Society) journeyed from Llantrisant to Ystalyfera to sample the ales, for a cracking and brilliant night out. |
