It is quiet close to Dublin, in fact the name derives from the noise a donkey makes, as it is within an Asse's roar of Dublin. Bray was in County Dublin at one stage, but some yahoo from Wicklow won it in a raffle at a singers session many years ago. The Bray Singers Club should be confused with the North Wicklow Singers Circle mentioned in previous threads, as it is the same. It just went thru the folk process. The change in name was made to draw those old Dublin singers who think Bray is still in Dublin. Some years ago, when the country was awash with money, in what we called the "Celtic Tiger", messers Henderson and Stout suggested a motorway be built from Tallaght to Bray. They could foresee years ago that singers in Knocklyon could use this motorway to get to Bray in 14minutes and 27 seconds for a singing session. 'Anything goes' in Bray - "from Sean Nós (pron. shan knowss - the old, traditional way)to Sinatra!" (Or Bennett, if you prefer.) Believe me, we've heard that range and beyond at our sessions. Part of the delight, for me anyway, is not knowing what to expect - except the unexpected. There are always new 'gems' to go along with the sheer joy of people just enjoying themselves in good, clean fun. Actually, it's regularly not that clean, but that's ok too... Hoping to replicate that in MacTurcaill's, starting this Sunday (see Thread: New singing session - Dublin City Centre). If you know any local singers, or listeners, they'd be made very welcome at either session. And there are lots of other sessions throughout this fair island. Al |

I took the trip at sunset, and the panoramic view of the Irish Sea was wonderful. I hope to make it back to Ireland next August. It would be nice to make it to the song session at Bray. -Joe- |
