Waiting to hear how different THIS is from Bush claiming the invasion was accomplished.

Combat mission continues as U.S.-Iraqi raid kills 7 in Fallujah
By Jamal Naji | McClatchy Newspapers

FALLUJAH, Iraq — U.S. and Iraqi forces raided a neighborhood in the longtime Sunni Muslim insurgent stronghold of Fallujah early Wednesday, Iraqi officials said, killing seven people in the deadliest joint operation since President Barack Obama announced the end of the American combat mission in Iraq two weeks ago.

The incident underscored how American forces remain engaged in offensive operations despite Obama's declaration that the fewer than 50,000 remaining U.S. troops would focus on advising and training the Iraqi military and police.

Iraqi police officials said that the raid, which also wounded three people, began when the U.S.-Iraqi team set off explosives around 1:30 a.m. in the Jubail neighborhood of Fallujah, about 40 miles west of Baghdad. American military helicopters supported the joint operation, according to residents.

Witnesses said that soldiers fatally shot several members of two families and raided the neighboring home of Yaseen Kassar, a former lieutenant colonel in the Iraqi army under Saddam Hussein. Kassar also was killed.

U.S. military officials refused to comment on the operation, and there was no information on whether Kassar or any of the other individuals killed had been the targets of the raid.

A senior police official in Fallujah, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to journalists, said Iraqi forces had sent advance word that a raid was coming but didn't offer details.

U.S. and Iraqi forces seized four of the dead bodies, witnesses said.

Fallujah, the largest city in western Anbar province, was once a hotbed of Sunni insurgent groups such as al Qaida in Iraq. As the U.S. military has drawn down its forces in recent months, militants have tried to step up their attacks.

A fourth-grader, Ahmed Humadi, said that soldiers had shot and killed his father and three of his brothers at their home.

"They entered and started yelling and cursing us and all the women," Ahmed said. "I begged them to let me find my 5-year-old brother, Ahmed, and they let me. I found him hiding behind the bed, trembling and afraid."

Family members said that Iraqi soldiers had handcuffed them and held them for several hours after the raid and that other relatives remained in military custody.

Also on Wednesday, nine off-duty Iraqi soldiers were killed and five were wounded when a roadside bomb detonated outside the northern city of Mosul, according to Iraqi police officials.

Things will settle down in the de facto Iraq civil war just as quickly as the hard feelings regarding the American Civil war have been assuaged.
How long has it been?
160 years and Southern States are still fuming with hate.

I think your point is quite apt, BB. It's the same kind of propaganda nonsense, simply done by a different administration and on a different day.

I'm not even slightly surprised that that would happen. It was inevitable that it would. This is what great empires do in their nasty little wars of occupation on someone else's land.

It's the old "Wag the Dog" scenario (Larry Beinhart) where presidents create wars to give them more power. Remember that the Chief Executive isn't as important as The Commander-in-Chief.

Both Obama and Bush are war-mongers. They both pursue(d) needless wars to satiate
the anger of reactionaries in the US many of whom were pissed because of the retreat from Vietnam.

Unfortunately for the US as hard as the Administration tries, the "mission" that was conceived was unworkable. Countless innocent lives have been sacrificed to this madness.

Too bad that many here remain intentionally blind.

Sorry, but YOU are suggesting that it is similar. Since we are so blind, I suppose you ought to explain the connections, rather than just C&P another 'loaded' article with sad stories.

Both Bush and Obama made a statement that the effort underway had been completed.

In the case of Bush, the INVASION was over, yet many here bitched about him saying so.

Yet no-one has complained that Obama declared COMBAT to be at an end, yet we are still in combat. THAT is treating him in a way that leads me to believe that most here are bogots who do not hold a black, Liberal president to the same standards that they held a white, Conservative one.

Capiche?

Differences?

Well, Obama did not invade a foreign country on allegations that were conjurations.

He didn't invoke an imaginary friend in the sky to purport to justify his actions.

He didn't posture on a military vehicle about how butch he and his invading soldiers were.

Should I go on?

Richard Bridge: "Well, Obama did not invade a foreign country on allegations that were conjurations."

I wouldn't be so sure of that one, at all!

R.B.: "He didn't invoke an imaginary friend in the sky to purport to justify his actions."

Well, I think HE is his own imaginary friend in the sky..He didn't have to 'invent one'.

R.B."He didn't posture on a military vehicle about how butch he and his invading soldiers were."

No, instead he goes to mosques, to pray, to show the Muslims what a 'friend' he is to them.

I guess it's just a matter to who panders to who. Bush had his audience, Obama has his.......and the 'difference' is WHAT?????

One man's ceiling, is another man's floor!........in other words, 'It's all bullshit street theater!'

By the way, if 'all the worlds a stage', where does the audience sit?

And when, exactly, did Obama say "mission accomplished"? Or, if you prefer, when did he say that combat has ended, or that US troops would no longer be involved in anything involving bullets flying, or anything remotely resembling that? What he actually said was The American combat mission in Iraq has ended. Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country. Read the entire test of the speech here.

And WHAT DID BUSH say?

The MISSION of OCCUPYING Iraq HAD been accomplished- but that did mnot stop the many here that claimed it was a lie BECAUSE there was still violence.

I see that Obama is being given a pass where Bush was not.

"The American combat mission in Iraq has ended."
sounds a lot like combat has ended- which it has NOT.

I do not criticize Obama for having said this- I criticize those here that criticized BUSH for the equivilant statement.

They are bigots and have demonstrated their bias by their own actions.

But the ACTIONS they criticized are being done in the SAME WAY by Obama, and it is ok- for a black Liberal.

hmmm..upon returning, I see we liberals are still blind ....intentionally?

Most of us do NOT see the situations are similar. We do NOT still design & plan and execute combat missions....but I think we still allowed to mount a defense if fired on.

I realize that Obama says he 'feels' black, that he identifies with his African American heritage, but here is the fact of the matter: He is just as WHITE as he is BLACK. So get off that train, OK, bb?
