Well, okay... Seems that there ain't alot below the line these dayas so I figurated that folks is either busy, stoned, died or just bored with the threads that we do have, so...

(Well, Boberdz... It ain't "drift" if their ain't no topic...")

Details, mah man, deatils...

So ya'll have at... This is like **freedom***...

(But, Boberdz... Ain' that like the "Mother of BS"???)

I donno??? Only go by there every othewr year to see if I can beat Amos to a big "..000" but he has a program that word on the street he paid over a grand to have that allows him to "snipe" them "..000" posts...

I mean, that's what I heard, mind you...

Back around 1962 'er so I was in high school and got a part time job runnin' an "addressograph" machine at the Northern Virgina Sun on Wilson Blvd., in Arlington, Va....

There was the pizza joint kinda accross Wilson Blvd called Marios Pizza and a cool black guy, Joe, bakin' the pizzas and takin' the orders...

Well, Joe is still there doin' the same thing that he has done now for pushin' 50 years!!!

That is a ture story and if ya' don't belive it??? Go meet Joe fir yerself... And the pizza is good, too...

I reckon the unintended prefix will vanish.

A drift for Bobert:
Walking home from a a visit at a neighbor's house tonight, another friend wanted to drive slowly alongside us, so we could "see the road." We thanked her and assured her we would be just fine without the car lights. Isn't it interesting that the wrong kind of light, or too bright a light, can obscure clear vision rather than light the way. Just enough of the right kind of light makes the dark of night seem luminous.

Go away from the cities and the artificial lights. You can see very well by the stars alone once your eyes become night-adapted. If you want to identify something, glance around it instead of staring directly at it.

In fact, just go where there is no artificial light, lay on the ground, and stare up at the stars. On a clear night, when there is no moon, you'll be amazed at what you see -- and how bloody insignificant you are.

Yes, Rapaire. I've always loved the night with its varying sorts of darkness and light. For some reason, the exchange with our friend, and ease with which we found our way in the silken night once her car lights faded over the rise made me think of some of our human interactions. Sometimes we can see more clearly in other ways too, just following your suggestions.

Exactly, don't look straight at what you're trying to see, look to the side slightly. The focus field of vision is odd, but that's the best way to see obscure things. Starlight can be enough to light your way. I worked a couple of winters out in the Sonoran Desert, way west of Kit Peak (where they complain about light pollution). We had the most amazing skies to study.

Bobert, I cooked myself some breaded okra tonight. First time for me. I have been growing it this year, mostly because my next door neighbor didn't have luck before and I wanted to try my green thumb, and I've given it all away. Is okra more deep south, or do you have it there in Virginia as well? It certainly needs a lot of tending - it grows so fast those pods get away from you quickly if you don't pick every 18 to 24 hours.

I'm with a couple who are close friends of mine. We're maybe 24 or so and this evening we are getting tremendously stoned, considering our existence, etc. The evening light shades to night and the room, without artificial light, is very dark. Bill is on the floor, Ruthie curled in a chair, and I'm totally at ease, slouched in a soft, old, wingback chair. The stereo plays something of Vivaldi's. The darkness is soon total, our lamb dinner had been fantastic, the weed and the conversation could not have been finer and now only Vivaldi makes waves in the cool night air coming in the through the screen..............Can you see the scene?

Without any prior notice, a match flared briefly followed by a flatulent jet blast as a 2 foot flame rose from the floor and burned itself out about 3 foot up. It was a memorable moment with a fart to match the quality of the day.........I tell you all this as I was amazed at how brightly it lit the room.

I grew this just to see how it looked, what bothered it, etc. It has been an interesting experiment, and I'll grow it farther apart next year. Interesting about your planting it in the landscape - I was thinking it might make a nice hedge. I rolled these pieces in a bowl, and decided I'd use a bag next time. I'm glad to have you confirm that now. And I had about that mix of flour and cornmeal also. The Zatarain's has a little heat, and some salt, but it's pretty good. (I bought a jar of it at Sam's Club that is enough for a family of 8, so I might as well use this as plain cornmeal for a while).

Spaw, you painted such a nice portrait of that evening. Tell me, do farts stink if you burn them first? ;-D

Well, heck, as long as it started out as an "obit" thread, I think we ought to get together and have an elaborate funeral for Bobert at the Getaway. New Orleans style would be appropriate, and can I ask for an open bar?

What kind of music would work for a Bobert funeral?

Should we give him a little time to convince us our funeral is premature, or should we bury him and get it over with?
Just a closer walk with thee,
    Sorry, Bobert, it must be.
    Walking to your destiny,
To thy grave, dear Bobert, I'll walk with thee.
There! That oughta do it. Bobert will be so proud, being sent on to the next dimension by the entire Mudcat crowd.

Congratulations, Bobert. This is one funeral you're going to enjoy....

a spot of randomness.

Why do I persist in going around barefooted when the floors are freezing and I have arthritis in my feet? I really hate any covering on my feet, but I would prefer them to be warm.

Why, when it is cooler weather do I not drink enough water and then get dehydrated? Why don't we feel thirst before we are dehydrated? Thirst should be like hunger pangs and come along before the body is in trouble.

I can't figure these things out.

I have been contemplating why it is so hard for me to stay organized. Today I have to take an air conditioner out of the window. But below the window sits nine boxes of stuff for a yard sale that never happened. If I move that stuff to the shed it will take an hour. That seems a terrible waste of time. So maybe I'll let the air conditioner stay for now...

Since the Getaway is on the Bay, Joe, I think Bobert would argue for the Viking tradition of setting the funereal ship out to sea. That would/will give him a chance to do a Sam McGee- who finally and at long last - got warm.

I don't think the car would run on farts; being largely methane, farts are LESS compressible than air.

Note (just by the way) that the energy required to fill a compressed air car with high-pressure air nd drive it, say, 100 miles, is probably a deal GREATER than the energy required to fill it with enough regular gas to drive that same 100 miles. The roads would be cleaner, but the net effect on atmosphere would not (unless the plants were solar, nuclear or wind powered).

If I was vain, I'd like to be displayed...like Jeremy Bentham

"As requested in his will, Bentham's body was dissected as part of a public anatomy lecture. Afterward, the skeleton and head were preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet called the "Auto-icon", with the skeleton stuffed out with hay and dressed in Bentham's clothes. Originally kept by his disciple Thomas Southwood Smith,[24] it was acquired by University College London in 1850. It is normally kept on public display at the end of the South Cloisters in the main building of the college, but for the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the college, it was brought to the meeting of the College Council, where it was listed as "present but not voting".[25]

The Auto-icon has a wax head, as Bentham's head was badly damaged in the preservation process. The real head was displayed in the same case for many years but became the target of repeated student pranks, including being stolen on more than one occasion. It is now locked away securely.[26]"

That's no doubt pretty close, Ebbie.... what is difficult is cultivating the self-awareness to 'catch yourself' and achieve something of a correction process...(meaning not "getting the right answers", but rather just sorting out the status of the questions and finding a fair & reasonable method of evaluating YOUR biases in comparison with the easy-to-see biases of others.) (sheesh...took me awhile just to construct that explication!)

What I learned from Philosophy was some of the basic principles of what 'rational' meant and that many questions were by definition 'tricky' and might remain so for a long... ∞ ∞ ...time. I do attempt to self-correct my own "blind or unexamined hypotheses", but the way it goes is that someone whose own biases go the other way will tell me that I have failed...*wry grin*.
Socrates said "Know thyself" but his instruction book on how is itself subject to debate.

(I said facetiously for years that I chose Philosophy because it was one area where you could make a living just being 'clever' and not having to be 'right'.)

Didn't ol' Socrates mean "Know thyself" in the "biblical" sense??

I can see him in the Agora responding to some wise-ass who just splattered mud all over his clean chiton with his chariot: middle fingers upraised, shouting "γνῶθι σεαυτόν!" as the guy rides away.

I am totally rattled. A young man poured gasoline all over himself and used a lighter to set himself on fire - in front of two of my co-workers. I feel so sad that someone so young should feel so desperate. I can't imagine the pain my co-workers are in.
One of them was involved in running down a robber last week. He came back to the office with bloody fists and a tale of stopping a break in at a jewelry store.
SHIT! I left NYC to get away from this crap.
Rant over. I pity the young man's mother tonight. He is just 24 years old. I pray for the best outcome for all concerned.

Good Lord, Sins! What would drive a young man to do such a thing? I hope only the best for his family, but I fear he has put them in much pain -- he must have been suffering to do that. Wasn't there any indication of what he was going through?

Never mind. Rant off.

Are you the reincarnation of a famous person?

Yes, I'm the reincarnation of myself. As far as I know, I'm the only person to have been reincarnated without going through the trouble of dying first.

It happened last Wednesday while I was sleeping. When I went to bed, I was me. When I woke up the next morning, I was me.

Does this make me the reincarnation of a famous person? No, but only because I've chosen to keep the unique story of my reincarnation a secret. If I were to let it become public knowledge, then I would be famous.

YO! Bobert!

I mixed a bag of 1/3 flour and 2/3 cornmeal (Zatarain's Fish Fry) and dropped the slices of okra I'd just picked. Shook 'em around, picked 'em out, and fried 'em. And the bag is in the fridge waiting for the next batch.

How's that sound?

Unfortunately for you, we have smoked you out of the woods....your secret is now in the public domain....Deal with it.

Handy Guide to Doublespeak!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you next read an academic paper or attend a conference where much is said about nothing, make sure you have this handy guide by your side.

"IT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN"...
I didn't look up the original reference.

"A DEFINITE TREND IS EVIDENT"...
This data is practically meaningless.

"WHILE IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO PROVIDE DEFINITE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS"...
An unsuccessful experiment, but I still hope to get it published.

"THREE OF THE SAMPLES WERE CHOSEN FOR DETAILED STUDY"...
The other results didn't make any sense.

"TYPICAL RESULTS ARE SHOWN"...
This is the most confusing graph.

"THESE RESULTS WILL BE IN A SUBSEQUENT REPORT"...
I might get around to this sometime, if pushed/funded.

"IN MY EXPERIENCE"...
Once.

"IN CASE AFTER CASE"...
Twice.

"IN A SERIES OF CASES"...
Thrice.

"IT IS BELIEVED THAT"...
I think.

"IT IS GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT"...
A couple of others think so, too.

"CORRECT WITHIN AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE" ...
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

"ACCORDING TO STATISTICAL ANALYSIS"...
Rumour has it.

"A STATISTICALLY-ORIENTED PROJECTION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE FINDINGS"...
A really wild guess.

"A CAREFUL ANALYSIS OF OBTAINABLE DATA"...
Three pages of notes were obliterated when I knocked over a beer glass.

"IT IS CLEAR THAT MUCH ADDITIONAL WORK WILL BE REQUIRED BEFORE A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THIS PHENOMENON OCCURS"...
I don't understand it....and I never will.

"AFTER ADDITIONAL STUDY BY MY COLLEAGUES"...
They don't understand it either.

"A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AREA FOR EXPLORATORY STUDY"...
A totally useless topic selected by my committee.

"IT IS HOPED THAT THIS STUDY WILL STIMULATE FURTHER INVESTIGATION IN THIS FIELD"...
I am pleased to feed you this rubbish.

I went to the Anschutz site and the pic at the top of the homepage shows the distinctive knurling on the forestock. I am surprised they have changed this TM on the new models.

I read the blurb for the first one and shook my head... "Please find here our rifles for a low-cost but very rapid and especially precise and effective ammunition with only little shot release noise for the closed season."
