BS: Prostitution laws in Canada changed?

New ruling.

I dunno. Allowing a common bawdy house seems a step backward to me. Won't that allow the subjugation of young women by "pimps" and thereby bring even worse problems than we have now?

BTW... prostitution in Canada is not illegal if it is between two individuals (that is a very simple explanation given for the purposes of beginning any discussion that might ensue).

Prostitutes are in the greatest danger both from their pimps and johns when they are plying their trade on the street. Many are addicted and abused and have little protection from life threatening danger or disease. While a bawdy house is far from my idea of heaven it has to be better and safer than the streets for both them and their customers.
I have sympathy for these "working girls" but some of the worst criminals are the damn pimps who force this life on them for their own evil and selfish gain. They should be castrated with a dull spoon and have their gonads shoved down their throat!

While prostitution (sex work) is not technically illegal in Canada, laws are such that there is little opportunity for sex work to evolve and trive as an above board business, beyond the dispicable control of the underworld, linked to organized crime and drugs.

For sex work to be a true profession (beyond that noted above) in Canada, like in a few world areas, a more progressive approach would be needed by law makers and enforcers. I doubt that it will ever happen.

Most prostitutes will likely continue to operate in on the shady underside of society, will be abused and will profit little.

It is a dangerous profession the same in the UK and added to that an increase in child trafficking of underaged girls being groomed to work as prostitutes is a frightening thought. Proper set-up establishments would have to be seen not to be taking underaged girls, if a girl is suspected of lying about her age then if they are going to be a proper business they should investigate each girl thoroughly before putting her on their books.

A strategy angle that police take here is to stop and question kerb crawlers many who turn out to be 'respectable' married men and don't want to risk the shame of it getting to his family. It doesn't solve it but going that route if it gets some kerb-crawlers off of the street then at least it is something.

Failing that I would like to see something happening to the pimps gonads too!

I suspect the federal government will intervene, and this will go to the Supreme court.

Prostitution laws struck down

Same old story !! It's simple, like drug-addiction ; legalise it, and then you can REGULATE it .....cut out the pimps,people-traffickers,procurers, etc, and allow those women who WANT to follow that path, for whatever reason,to do so in safe, sanitary, licensed premises which are regularly inspected by Medical Officers. Some other, more enlightened, countries have,I believe, done something along similar lines with marked success.

One option is to make it legal for the prostitutes but criminal for the customers...

As an old lady of the trade once said to me, "With all these willing amateurs there's no profit in a nice, well-run, whorehouse anymore."

bubblyrat, I liked what I saw in the seaport city of Kiel some 40 years ago. The city furnished apartment buildings for the women, everything seemed well-regulated, and the city collected taxes.
Amsterdam also seemed to have a civilized attitude; the rate was standardized.

If the women are respected as human beings all can be well. Too, too often they are viewed as scum, as unterfraulein, as less than human, things to be used and thrown away.

True. It is forgotten that there are 'rent-boys' who do the same thing out there too. What is the betting that that is more well hidden up?

Well, here's how they do it in Nevada..

BBC Panorama

I'm not sure the term 'sex worker' is a good idea.

Maybe it would be good to have a company that would deal with all prostitutes, controlled by the Government.

It should exclude all pimps and drugs.

It should be a company like most people work for.

The prostitutes should be valued and protected at all times.

Anything else should be banned and all offenders sent to prison.

Perhaps this should be part of a young persons sex education at school. After learning about the ideal relationship to be in they could touch on the subject not just the moral or immoral side in an unbiased way explaining the dangers that comes with prostitution. At the same time explain the law side of things. It might deter people contemplating doing it but it should be fair to teach them their rights in law even though ideally society would rather they steer away from the idea.
