27 Jan 17 - 02:29 PM (#3835216) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Siege of a Nation (The Fureys) From: Joe Offer Gee, I see we've had a lot of requests over the years for sheet music for "Siege of a Nation." I wondered why no lyrics had been posted. I found a YouTube recording of the song here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lszi0EsOJbQ. It's an instrumental piece, so there are no lyrics. There are lots of lyrics sites offering lyrics for this song, but they tell you that they don't have lyrics available. In 1984, Soodlum published THE FUREYS & DAVEY ARTHUR SONG BOOK - 26 Golden Greats by Ireland's Leading Folk Group - used copies are readily available at booksellers. I wonder if this song is one of the 26 in the book. The Fureys have a Website, http://www.thefureys.com/ - it might be an idea to contact them and ask if they know where to get sheet music. -Joe- |
27 Jan 17 - 02:44 PM (#3835218) Subject: Index: The Fureys & Davey Arthur Songbook From: Joe Offer I found an index for the songbook online at http://picclick.co.uk/The-Fureys-and-Davey-Arthur-Song-Book-252561235441.html#&gid=1&pid=4. No "Siege of a Nation," but here's the index: THE FUREYS & DAVEY ARTHUR SONG BOOK - 26 Golden Greats by Ireland's Leading Folk Group Publisher: Soodlum, 1984 The Green Fields of France When You Were Sweet Sixteen The Rooster From Clare to Here Leaving Nancy O'Carolan Tribute Derrol in the Rain I Will Love You Yesterday's People The Big Ship's A-Sailing Evening Falls My Love Is Like a Red Red Rose Night Ferry The Lonesome Boatman Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway Steal Away Paddy and the Barrel (The Sick Note) The Old Man The Reason I Left Mullingar Wounded Knee Belfast Mill Gallipoli Song For Ireland Dublin A Song for the Fox Katriona This is the only Fureys songbook I have been able to find, and it doesn't have "Siege of a Nation." I have no idea who the "mike" is above who says he transcribed it, and he did not say how to get a copy of his transcription. |
27 Jan 17 - 03:46 PM (#3835230) Subject: RE: Sheet Music Req: Siege of a Nation (The Fureys) From: Helen Well, what do you know? (Or, what I really wanted to say was: Whale Oil Beef Hooked!) I just did some Googling and on a Dick Gaughan site listing some of his tracks he shows the composer of Siege of a Nation as Mikis Theodorakis, the well known Greek composer. Dick Gaughan's Discograhy - Folk Friends 2 (1981) Here is the music from the movie State of Siege was a movie made in 1972 according to the info on this page: Mikis Theodorakis - State of Siege Some more intensive research is now needed to see if we can find the music notation or a midi file which can be converted to music notation, hampered by the need to find out what the title of the tune is in Greek. Conan the Librarian, to the rescue! Helen |
27 Jan 17 - 04:12 PM (#3835237) Subject: RE: Sheet Music Req: Siege of a Nation (The Fureys) From: Helen Further to my research, the tune may be called Paola 11099. I still don't know what the Greek translation is. |
27 Jan 17 - 04:14 PM (#3835238) Subject: RE: Sheet Music Req: Siege of a Nation (The Fureys) From: Joe Offer That's brilliant, Helen! Apparently, the actual name of the piece is "Paola 11099," and it was used in the movie State of Siege. Here's another recording: This article on State of Seige says Theodorakis later used the same melodies for Canto General I haven't been able to find sheet music for it, though. It's hard to know what name to look under, since it has been used in so many different ways under so many different names. I suppose that Mikis Theodorakis (1925—) is best-known for the music for Zorba the Greek and Serpico. -Joe- |
27 Jan 17 - 05:39 PM (#3835251) Subject: RE: Sheet Music: Siege of a Nation/Paola (The Fureys) From: Helen Yes, Joe. Thanks to Dick Gaughan's website for crediting the composer. Still, we aren't out of the woods yet. I was hoping to find a midi file which could be converted to ABC or notation, but so far no luck with that either. It's probably still in copyright. Helen |

If we can find out what the name of the Paola 11099 tune is in Greek, we may be able to find it among some of the sheet music sites with music by Mikis Theodorakis like this site. 30 Jan 17 - 01:39 PM (#3835747) Subject: RE: Sheet Music: Siege of a Nation/Paola (The Fureys) From: gillymor What an intriguing melody. Here's a solo guitar version My Spanish is limited but it looks as if you can get a hold of Senor Sosa he may send you a guitar transcription of the piece. At the very least you might be able to pick out the chords and notes from his playing. He's capoed II and playing in F#m which is the key that Theodorakis plays it in the link above. Fureys do it in Em judging from the link to their version. |
