07 Oct 10 - 12:55 PM (#3001809) Subject: Folk Trail - Le Jog 2011 From: Lady Policeman Clare Penney from Pennymoor Singaround,Devon has come up with the idea of doing a walk from Lands End to John O'Groats (hence 'LE JOG'). She wants people to join her to walk all or part of the route and/or organise evening folk events along the route. The aim is to record a snapshot of folk music and song in the the UK in 2011. A copy of the CD/DVD is to be offerd to the Oral History section of the British Museum and Cecil Sharp House. This is a non profit making venture. There is a map on the website at the top of the list of places and dates. I purposely have tried to keep the message short so interested people can go to the website and get all the information from the 'horses mouth' if you see what I mean! Depending on the details of the route, it's about 900 to 950 miles. The shortest route of about 865 miles uses a fair amount of motorway. I cycled it in 2007 with a friend, and we recorded 953 miles. Incidentally, we took 17 days but the cycling record is now a little over 44 hours - a recumbent rider has brought this down to 41 hours. The walking (running) record is about 9 days. Always add the http:// - if I get the time I may try writing code to get round it and offer it to Max. I tried to find the post codes for the venues but not many were actually listed last time I looked. I provided them for the area I cover, Clare thanked me. They can be used for map links as I do on cresby.com and SatNavs. |

If you read the Twitter bit on the right at the bottom there are a few updates up to 9 hours ago. They are still looking for drivers in certain parts and particularly in May. They are certainly getting a lot of support from around the country indeed from around the world ... well Ireland and France as well! A tremendous undertaking and I think we can forgive them not updating the Blog when probably the last thing on their mind is technology with all that beautiful countryside around them and music sessions to enjoy! I am neither on Twitter or Facebook but managed to glean enough information from the website to follow their route and see what they have done so far. Rang one of the walkers just now and they were walking along Hayle beach. They have had problems updating the Blog due to lack of Internet access but hve promised to do so as soon as possible. The next planned session looks to be on Thursday 7th April at The Queen & Railway pub, St.Columb Major. |

They got to Okehampton today in the rain and are off towards Crediton tomorrow. Check the website and go along to any of the sessions. They are filming and recording all of them to build an archive, a snapshot of folk music in Cornwall, England and Scotland over 3 months. |

I got to the South Zeale session last night. The walkers are still looking amazingly fit. (Clare said the walking was "a doddle" it's the sessions that are wearing her out!) What struck me most was the wonderful mix of people in the session, ages from teens or twenties upwards to ..(manners prevents me from saying), musicians from newcomers to those from families with a folk pedigree (and local to Dartmoor too) that makes "the revival" look like a hiccup and all enjoying the music and song. I've read a few threads here on Mudcat wondering how/if "folk" is surviving. Perhaps the folk club era of clubs that booked guests every week is over but, down at ground level, where it came from before the revival, it looks as though folk is flourishing. I don't know whether all the sessions along the route will show the same picture but it will be fascinating to find out. Congratulations to the team for their concept, for their determination and for bringing together the folk communities in this way. Have they, do you suppose, started a British version of the songline/dreaming track of Australian aboriginal culture?? If they are passing near you do go along and support them. |

I won't get to Crediton / Cheriton Fitzpaine until tomorrow, by which time Claire and co will have got to the Pennymoor singaround! And we're running a singaround in Cheriton Fitzpaine tomorrow evening at the Crediton festival, so no chance of getting to Pennymoor. I'm glad Claire's finding the walking a doddle, especially as she'll be at home tomorrow night - when Dick Stanger cycled from LE to JoG, he went via Chippenham and stayed at home for the night. He said afterwards that getting back on the bike the next morning and setting off again after a comfortable night at home was one of the hardest parts of the trip. Kitty |

Feel free to join them for the walks or the sessions, they're a great bunch and are doing an amazing job. They have been well received at all venues en route and are a quarter of the way through their journey to John O'Groats. in the next week they will be at sessions as follows: Sunday - Prince Albert, Rodborough Monday - No session - they have to do their washing, blogging and recovery sometime!! Tuesday - The Corner Cupboard, Winchcombe, Wednesday - 2 sessions! How do they do it! 1pm The Yew Tree Conderton. Evening - Croft Farm Café & Bar, Bredon's Hardwick. Thursday - The Fold, Bransford. Friday - The Rose & Crown, Shrawley. From their website (link above somewhere: I can't do them) they'll have "just" 31.9 miles (!) left after tonight's camp at Camster. They've done 1202 miles so far. Remember that they've not just done the walk; they've had sessions at many of their overnight stops and they've recorded and documented all these sessions as a "snapshot of Folk Music in 2011". This will produce a fantastic archive of what is really happening in local sessions and singarounds across the country. Congratulations to all involved and good luck with the final days. Their pace was so fast by the end that they would have arrived sooner but for the fact that they took care to keep to schedule so that others could meet up with them at the times and places advertised. The walk took 87 days in all, with just 2 rest days scheduled en route (at Ilam and Jedburgh). You can see the route itinerary here: http://www.folktrail.com/stages.php Unlike those who take the shorter 800+ mile road route, the FolkTrail took the scenic/endurance route, following long-distance paths to avoid roads wherever possible. So the terrain was tough in places - especially in the north Pennines, where the going is hard at the best of times without the foul weather conditions that they encountered there. After leaving the Great Glen in Scotland they again encountered tough walking conditions - but this time due to having to walk the A9, where they had to constantly jump into the hedge to get out of the way of heavy traffic. The four walkers who walked the entire route had covered 1240+ miles (not to mention the extra miles walked most evenings to the session or pub!). They found the long-distance walking easy, but unsurprisingly they found that keeping awake at the late-night sessions was not so easy. In all we numbered fourteen (walkers and supporters) at John O'Groats, where we enjoyed champagne, chocolates and cake followed by a celebration dinner and lively session in the evening. The following day most of us took the ferry from Gills Bay to Orkney, for a couple of days rest before heading back southwards. Congratulations to the FolkTrail walkers and here's looking forward to FolkTrail 2012... |
