My daughter needs to get a formal UK appraisal for insurance purposes but the local guitar shop can't do it. Does anyone in the area know of a guitar place within, say 30 miles, that would be able to give a valuation? |

I suggest if the guitar is new you refer them to official UK price list. It it is second hand there are two guitar shops in Nottingham that might do the job - Hobgoblin, and a place the name of which I can't remember just off Canning Circus - it might be in the Alfreton Road. If you come up Maid Marian Way to Bar 7 and follow the roads round, the first exit is the Derby Road, and it's the third road. If you miss the turning you are going back towards Parliament Square. |

Nonsense, unless it's a one-off or classic instrument which has a value enhanced by its rarity. If it's a major manufacturer's 'normal' production model, a written valuation isn't necessary - the value of such an instrument is pretty well documented. Jacqui, try Musicguard Musician's Insurance - I have two Martins, a Lowden and a Fylde mandolin insured with them, no valuations were required other than a declaration from me based on manufacturers' list prices, which I update each year on-line at renewal time. The policy also includes PL insurance. |

We've got 7 guitars, a mandolin, flute, cello and clarinet insured on our contents insurance, including travelling with them, and none have required formal valuations. In fact, most of them haven't required a separate entry on the form (there's a value cutoff for individual items). In the last 10 years we've claimed for a stolen flute and a stolen clarinet (both nicked from our kids) and the insurers paid out on the list prices with no quibbles or questions. As you say, a one off classic instrument of high value may be a different kettle of fish. |
