Lyr ADD: Hard Times Come Again No More (Parodies)

01 Nov 01 - 07:46 PM (#584316)
Subject: Lyr Add: VIAGRA SONG: 'Hard times come again...'
From: alison

Just sang this is paltalk and got asked for the lyrics, so here they are... I was given them by a friend so I can't say who wrote it.....

The Viagra Song (Hard Times come again some more)

As he pauses at the chemist and counts out many coins
And begs for Viagra at the door
There's an ache that will linger forever in his loins
Oh hard times come again some more

Chorus
There's a song a sigh of the droopy
Hard times, hard times come again some more
Many days she has lingered around his bedroom door
Oh hard times come again some more

While he seeks youth and vigour and women night and day
His poor wife is standing at the door
Though her voice is silent, her pleading looks will say
Oh hard times come again some more

There's a pale droopy old man who toils his life away
And dreams of better days in store
Though his voice may be merry, he's sighing all the day
Oh hard times come again some more

Hey, that's true, 'Spaw. In fact, you probably shouldn't even say the V-word: your faithful ticker might go off like a skyrocket just from the sound. I guess it's OK to type it, though...as long as you don't think too loud.

funny?...tsk...I think it's a sad song, especially to that tune. (having taken medications for a couple of months one time that gave me a premonition of the problem, I can identify too well...*wry grin*)

not saying sad songs are bad, just that, as written, that one doesn't raise a chuckle in me.

"Me 'usband's got no courage in him" is similar.

53: a songcircle is a bunch of folks sitting around (in a circle or something resembling one) singing together, trading songs, taking turns, being nonjudgemental, and basically having fun with music. Instruments are often optional. Similar to a "jam" or a "session", but principaly vocal. My definition, and I'm sure others have their own twist on it.

Another Viagra song (mainly by Julian Flood, I changed it a bit) - "Maids When You're Young" with an alternate ending:

Off to the doctor go, hey dingdorum ay
Off to the doctor go, me being young
Off to the doctor go, tell him your tale of woe -
Maids when you're young can you wed an old man?

Now he's got Viagra, hi-iddle-hi-agra
He's got Viagra, hi-iddle-hi-ay,
When he takes Viag-a-ra he comes like Niagara -
Maids when you're young you CAN wed an old man.

CHORUS: Now he's got his falorum, fal-diddle-orum,
       He's got his falorum, fal-diddle-i-ay,
       He's got his falorum, he's found his dingdorum,
       Now maids when you're young, you can wed an old man.

I heard a rumour that a new anti-arthritis drug will be coming on to the market soon.

Apparently the makers call it "agravi", because it's for un-stiffening old men.

From: Curious Clouseau

Hi all,

I'm looking for the lyrics to a Parody of "Hard Times Come Again No More" that I heard sung at a session not too long ago. It's all about an Auld man suffering with impotency and was hilarious:

"Many times she had waited outside my bedroom door but Hard Times come again no more!"

If anyone has the full lyrics they would be much appreciated!
Thanks.

Don't know who wrote this one

Hard Nights Come Again no More

1.Let us pause in life's pleasures and put aside our beers,
Which we all sup whether rich or poor;
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;
Oh! Hard nights come again no more

Chorus
'Tis the song, the sigh of the bleary
Hard nights, hard nights come again no more
Many days I have woken upon the bathroom floor
Oh! Hard nights come again no more.

2.When we seek shade and solace in the harsh light of day
When our frail forms are fainting at the door;
When we'd wish the wide world silent, our own quiet voice will say
Oh! Hard nights come again no more.

3.There's a pale drooping maiden who can put those beers away,
With the very best of us, that much is sure;
Though the beer makes her merry, the gossip's made her say,
Oh! Hard nights come again no more.

4.'Tis the penitance of those who often to the bar did go
'Tis the oath we've broken oft' before
'Tis the dirge of all those who, in the morning, suffer so
Oh! Hard nights come again no more.

Anne

the song was written by Stephen Foster, HE SUPPORTED THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY
This parody is typical example of what many parody writers do
1. not acknowledge the original writer, without whom these plagiarists would not be able to turn good work into often second rate imitations and in this case smut.

Sandman, everyone knows the original writer was Stephen Foster, parody isn't plagiarism, and where is the smut in the lyrics Anne posted? "When correctly viewed/Everything is lewd" (Tom Lehrer), but the lyrics are about overindulgence in spirits, no?

Gerry,
1. I was referring to the first parody as regrds Smut
2, everybody does not know that Foster was the original song writer
3 Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement.
4 Without the original song there can be no parody
so performers should, when doing parodies, acknowledge the original author, my experience of the uk folk revival is that acknowledgement is rarely the case

The other point about parodies is that they often focus on the original song in a negative way, they take the original work and laugh and ridicule it.
let us use somebody elses work to get a cheap laugh, what happens next is that when a performer sings the original work, members of the audience will possibly be thinking about the parody while the original is being performed.
The Kipper Family[ who parodied The Coppers were very good perfomers, but when I hear other perfomers doing these parodies the performance is often mediocre , there is rarely an explanation about the original copper family or even who the kippers were.

Hi, Dick -
I think that often, parodies are the highest form of compliment. There's no doubt that "Hard Times Come Again No More" was the most perfect song ever composed by Stephen C. Foster (although there are many others that are close). I don't think the parodies damage the original in any way, because the original is just so good.
But the parodies can really be funny....

joe, but humour is very personal.
1.I think parodies can come into peoples minds when the original is being sung, so they become a distraction
2.the parodies are not necessarily funny some maybe some may not be ,plus being funny is also down to good perfomance, timing, presentation, etc

Sandman, you could have prevented any misunderstanding by making it clear when you first cried "smut" that you were referring to the first parody, and not the second. As to performers not crediting songwriters, that problem is not limited to parodies; I'm sure you have heard, as I have, many songs performed with no mention of their creators. I try to convince myself that it's carelessness, rather than robbery.

I suppose it's "proper manners" to credit the original songwriter when presenting a parody. But heck, a parody rarely works if the original song isn't well-known. If the audience doesn't know that the original "Hard Times" was written by Stephen C. Foster, they won't understand the parody, either.
When you're speaking of a song that is so well-known, is it really necessary to identify the long-dead author of the original?

Subject: ADD: Hard Crackers Come Again No More (Parody)^^^
From: Hrothgar

The taste for musical parody saw Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times, Come Again No More” receive a new set of words to become the “musical bellyache” of the Army of the Potomac.

HARD CRACKERS (Come Again No More)
Words: Unknown (1st Iowa Regiment?)        Music: Stephen Foster (1826 – 1864)

Let us close our game of poker, take our tin cups in hand
While we gather 'round the cook tent's door
Where dry mummies of hard crackers are given to each man,
Oh, hard crackers, come again no more!

CHORUS:
'Tis the song and the sigh of the hungry
Hard crackers, hard crackers, come again no more
Many days have you lingered upon our stomachs sore
Oh, hard crackers, come again no more!

There's a hungry, thirsty soldier, who wears his life away
With torn clothes, whose better days are o'er.
He is sighing now for whiskey and, with throat as dry as hay
Sings," Hard crackers, come again no more!"

CHORUS

'Tis the song that is uttered in camp, by night and day
'Tis the wail that is mingled with each snore.
'Tis the sighing of the soul, for spring chickens far away
Oh, hard crackers, come again no more!

CHORUS

When a compassionate officer ordered corn-meal mush served
as a change of diet, the soldiers, ever bitching, responded:

But to groans and to murmurs there has come a sudden hush,
Our frail forms are fainting at the door;
We are starving now on horse-feed, that the cooks call mush
Oh, hard crackers, come again once more!

CHORUS:
It's the dying wail of the starving
Hard crackers, hard crackers, come again once more;
You were old and very wormy, but we pass your failings o'er
Oh, hard crackers, come again once more!
Oh, hard crackers, come again once more!

It seems a pity in a way to parody so perfect a song as 'Hard Times', but it's been going on pretty well since the original song was written by SCF. In the 3rd 1882 edition of Harland's Ballads and Songs of Lancashire a parody' from a street broadside' refers to the Cotton Famines in 'Short time Come Again No More'.

Here I go, preaching to the choir
But sometimes they can become tone deaf.

There’s a hard time a-comin’
When inflation’s near at hand
And the hammer is falling on the poor.
The rich are inheriting the spoils of the land
While hard times are headed here once more.

It’s a cry, a moan of the poor man
Hard times, hard times are known from every shore.
We’re getting over Covid, now we’re headed off to war
Oh hard times are standing at the door

Can we save our ourselves in time
to avert the coming doom?
Can we rid ourselves of all that we deplore?
Is there hope for humanity? Can we make a little room
So that fear and hatred come again no more?

There’s a sign, a light of a new world
Hard times, hard times need not be in store
If we mobilize together to protest the coming war
Oh hard times may come again no more.

Wisconsin Daily Patriot (Feb. 17, 1863):

"We know how to appreciate...good soft bread....You ought to have seen the boys hop out, some of them singing, 'Hard tack! hard tack! come again no more!'"

Urbana [O.] Union (March 1, 1865):

             "Hard Tack," Come No More

Let us look into our havre-sacks [sic], a moment let us pause,
While we all eat our "grub" outside the door;
Let us sing, brother soldiers, a song of tired jaws,
Oh! 'Hard Tack,' come again no more!

CHORUS.--'Tis the song of a weary, hungry soldier,
Hardtack [sic], hardtack, come again no more;
Many days we have chewed you, until our jaws are sore,
Oh! “Green-Backs,” come again once more.

Though we long for fresh provisions, and Paymasters every day,
We get hard-tack [sic], the weevil has run o'er;
And "salt horse" to tough for eating, and not one cent of pay,
Such hard times we never saw before.

There's a poor, tired soldier, who wears his life away,
And wishes his three years’ time were o’er;
Though his stomach may be empty, he is sighing all the day,
Oh! hard-tack come again no more.

‘Tis the prayer daily uttered by every soldier brave,
Now camped on the Chicamauga [sic] shore;
Come, pay us off and treat us better, and save us from the grave,
Such hard times were never seen before.

At the battle of Chicamauga, our boys were very brave,
And many will eat hard-tack no more;
They have left us now forever, to fill a soldier’s grave,
Such hard times were never seen before.

Columbian (Bloomsburg, Pa) (Apr. 4, 1907) [ref. to the Civil War]:

They stopped the game of poker and joined the hungry pack
By rushing to the cook's wide open door.
Where the hardest of hard crackers were given, called "hard tack."
O, hard tack come again no more.

            CHORUS
'Twas the song and the sigh of the hungry,
Hard tack, hard tack, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered upon our stomachs sore.
O, hard tack come again no more.

He was a lazy hungry soldier, who cursed his life away--
His clothing showed their better days were o'er.
He sighed for mother's buscuits and pot pie far away.
O, hard tack come again no more.
       Chorus.

We crossed the hills and valleys, thro' briars, bogs, and brush,
And gray-backs were an ever-present bore.
We heard reb yells and vollies [sic], sometimes had ground-hog mush.
O, hard tack come again no more.
       Chorus.

Though very old and wormy, you were pie beside that mush
With our salt-horse and our pork forevermore.
If gray-backs made us squirmy, our hunger made us rush
For that hard tack that we never did adore.
       Chorus.

[John L. Smith, Thomas J. Hyatt, et al.] History of the Corn Exchange Regiment, 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers (Phila.: J. L. Smith, 1888), p. 105:

The much-abused army diet, which, when sufficient, was by no means distasteful, had become intolerably scant. So seriously did the larder need replenishing that the song of ‘Hard Times, Hard Times, Come Again No More’ was appropriately paraphrased in the following refrain :

“'Tis the voice of the hungry, crying o'er and o'er,
Hard-tack! hard-tack! Come again once more.
Many days I have wandered from my little dog-house door,
Crying, Hard-tack! hard-tack! Come again once more.”
