The book first published in 1992.

Did I once hear of a whiskey named Old Amos?

Nah, you're getting mixed up with an Old Amos Coffee, it's like an Irish Coffee, but instead of cheap Irish Whisky added to coffee, you add 20 year old Highland malt to a lukewarm cup of coffee.

Old Amos is a foul concoction that you rub on yourself to fend off bears and rabid dogs. It smells godawful, but it works. ;-)

John:

In your bloody-minded Knoxian code, is there never a chapter on forgiving past slights? Holy mackerel!! If I had but known you were going to be so obdurate, I would have chosen a sin WORTH not being forgiven for...

There is no such sin. ;-)

Amergin, the trouble is that Dachshunds tend to be attracted by really foul smells!

Nah Amos, you don't understand the Scottish psyche, IF I was upset still, I would never mention it.
So when I tease you about it, it means I am sanguine about the whole thing.
Actually in retrospect, it was very funny.
