Given the fact that there's NEVER enough time predicatesthe obvious:
"It's Never too soon to start!"

Having now completed two days of in-depth research in the FSGW website archives, followed up by conversations with several FSGW Officers, including notably Dennis Cook, the FSGW Webmaster, we've now ascertained that currently there exists no "Getaway Program Planning Committee" whatsoever for the getaway year 2011.

So the first order of business regarding next years FSGW getaway is to establish the NEW new and expanded FSGW Program planning committee-

Nominations are now open for the following positions:

Committee Chairperson
Asst. Chairperson
Recording Secretary

Nominees must be FSGW members in good standing, and all meetings will be held "live" on this thread, or on a special designated thread to allow "total transpanency", as opposed to the alleged "protected" back room procedures!

These positions, of course, per FSGW tradition are voluntary and involve no compensation, other then the sheer joy of "serving".

Nominations will be automatically closed after 4 nominations are submitted for any position or after 4 days (5 PM) EST, whichever comes first.

Please nominees, do refuse your nomination, or you'll get a black star next to your name.

We all look forward to a VERY special 2011 getaway, with your help, of course.

Best regards

Sincerely

The Getaways of the past HAVE been very special, Gene. The Getaway committee has traditionally chosen sainted people of infinite patience to handle program planning, and they have always done an extraordinary job. They bend over backwards to accommodate the concerns and ideas of everyone.

In other words, back off.

The Getaway belongs to FSGW. If some non-Greater Washington people would like to help with program planning, I suggest they contact Nancy King with ideas or for possible inclusion in the committee. I do not think mudcat is an appropriate forum for this FSGW committee. Extra ideas are always welcome, but the meetings/committee belong to FSGW.

I have a foot in both camps: I have been going to the Getaways since 1985 (but never lived in the DC area), and, indeed, the Digital Tradition was born at an FSGW weekend in 1988.

Joe:

I'm an original FSGW Founder, Further I've spoken to the powers that be on the FSGW Board, what's going on here, is an attempt at expanding the getaway presentations as a means of attracting new member as well as increasing available funding for the getaways.
Seriously Joe, there's no threat here. The FSGW is a volunteer based organization, and lord knows I've done more then my share of volunteering.

The one thing that's been noted over and over again is the quote "there's just not enough time..."

I'm semi-retired and have lots of time to invest in this, my particular passion.

Most others in the FSGW, have full time jobs, families etc. So of course, they always hve little time.

Further, I' live here in the Silver Spring, MD area...immediately available to all or anyone who might need my personal attention, and less then 30 minutes from the getaway site itself.

I'm astounded and just don't understand why you've chosen to attack me in this manner?

I guess that no good deed goes unpunished, wouldn't a pm or an e-mail have served better then this uncalled for public display showing nothing other then your personal position, and having nothing to do with what I'm attempting to do here in the best interests (my opinion) of the FSGW organization.

Could you explain to me, perhaps by e-mail, your need to stifle volunteerism, in an organization based upon such volunteerism?

With all due respect.

The FSGW Getaway will be planned by a committee created under the auspices of the organization, not by an ad hoc group of Mudcatters outside of channels. Further nominations here are irrelevant. If you wish to volunteer, contact the existing committee. This thread is now closed.

As a Getaway attendee of long standing, I'd like to comment on the idea of an all-day ballad room. It certainly doesn't need leaders, or scorecards or much more than a designated room. If noone shows up, then drop it. If folks like it, it then frees up 2-3 hours of regular programming. What's the problem?
