English music has always been an evolving beast, reflecting the many peoples who have come to live here down the centuries and adopting these outside influences at will. Free, RSVP essential to Fabio Grandi, fabiog@frances-lincoln.com, 020 7284 4009 Thursday 11 Waly Waly on the Ukulele: Ukulele settings of Cecil Sharp music Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Following its sell out shows earlier this year, the all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain returns to Cecil Sharp House with a specially devised programme of arrangements of tunes collected by Cecil Sharp to celebrate the end of Sharp's 150th birthday year. 8 - 11pm, tickets £17.50 (£15 conc) advance; £20 (£17.50 conc) on the door Wednesday 17 Folk Rising Presented by EFDSS and The Magpie's Nest Following the packed-out events this summer, this is the second series of Folk Rising. A three-part studio concert series presents a sample of the freshest, undiscovered and at times radical music being produced within the indefinable folk tradition. With the burgeoning profile that folk music has achieved in recent years never has there been a showcase opportunity for the periphery musicmakers approaching folk from the 'outside' as well as those from 'within'. This will be a roulette of a musical experience charting the daring and the dangerous, the wonderful and the weird but above all suggesting how the future of folk will sound. With Sam Lee and the Gillie Boys, The Staves, Skinny Lister, Tommy McCarth. 8-11pm, tickets £5 Thursday 25 9Bach & Mountain Firework Company 9Bach rework the traditional Welsh folk song, creating a new, stark sound. They blend guitar, voice, harp, harmonium and glockenspiel to create music reminiscent of classic Fairport Convention, Pentangle and even Portishead. "This brilliant young Welsh indie-folk band led by Lisa Jen Brown's gorgeous vocals take traditional songs and recast them on a spectral, haunting electro sound canvas." Problem perhaps was google-analytics.com being upset by my gmail account. That - the gmail account - had locked me out and needed the password re-set. All too clever? Only website so affected apart from gmail itelf. Eventually cured by yet another re-boot. Thanks for the offer of help. |
