19 Oct 10 - 09:07 AM (#3010555) Subject: RE: Peggy Seeger on Radio 4 From: John MacKenzie Well that was interesting. Still don't like the woman though. She provokes the same reaction in me as Ewan does, I like and admire what they did, and the heritage they share, but I don't like her as a person. I suppose my view of Peggy was coloured by the first time I met her, in a folk club in Hamilton in Scotand, in the very early 60's I think it was. I heard her swearing in the 'Green room', and unlike today, a woman who swore then, was a rare thing, and I was shocked, at the time. Nowadays I find a lot of younger women and girls more foul mouthed than many of the lorry drivers I worked with. I also found the sound at the beginning of the programme very poor quality, and it was hard to hear what was being said. Why Radio 4 has this love of playing music in the background, I don't know, but it's bloody annoying. |

Like John, I found the singing over the talking near the beginning very distracting, but unlike him, I found her to be a lovely lady, when I was lucky enough to meet her a couple of years ago at Cobargo festival in Oz. Oh well - horses for courses I guess.... |

20 Oct 10 - 04:47 AM (#3011283) Subject: RE: Peggy Seeger on Radio 4 From: Marje I was disappointed with the programme. There seemed to be a lot of pointless chat about nothing in particular, with unexciting details about her life, and precious little about her music. I can't say I took to her as a person, either - she came over as rather full of herself. Marje |

20 Oct 10 - 05:59 AM (#3011307) Subject: RE: Peggy Seeger on Radio 4 From: The Sandman interesting comments about 5.22 about social deprivation. MY father told me a similar story about many of the boys in his class[in Essex] not having any boots to wear and they were sons of farmers[not farm labourers]. so as well as urban poverty there was plenty of rural poverty too. |
