Hi Big Al - it's been a long time. Great song.

I have an affection for the music of Kerry Mills - and here's Whistling Rufus which, strictly speaking, is a two-step rather than a ragtime piece. It follows the ragtime theme pattern, though. This was a great favourite with British jazz bands in the 1950s.

Yes Whistling Rufus was a great favourite of mine also. my first gig was in a trad band. I was rubbish. Years later I wrote a variant of Whistling Rufus called The Big Red Sausage - not really ragtime - but here it is.

That's really nice maybe you should give to one of those music libraries. It sounds a bit like a film music pastiche of a piano roll ragtime piece - a bit like the sting.

There used to be a guy on the English scene called Pete Quinn, who was the best when it came to ragtime. he made a comeback - he was playing at the Priddy festival about four years ago - but he seemed to have fallen out of love with ragtime guitar.

The other English guy who was pretty useful was John James, but I always felt Pete had the edge.

At the time Stefan Grossman was bringing in great ragtime players from the continent and the States - I remember even the great Ralph McTell felt a bit overawed by Stefan's gang on the Kicking Mule label. Needless to say Ralph's touch was always unique and in a class of its own.

I don't have a recording of this on the web, but it is a rag-inspired song about a guy who was always "ragging" about every little thing.

THE 24-HOUR-A-DAY, 7-DAY-A-WEEK-RAG RAG
Words and Music: Trapper (© Al Boyce)

    CHORUS
D'you ever have a day when everything went wrong?
I have, and that's the reason that I'm writing this song,
    You're on the 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week-rag rag.
You yell and scream at everyone that's in your sight,
You tell them where to stick it 'cause you know you're right,
    You're on the 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week-rag rag.

You find yourself awoken at a quarter to four,
Stub your toe and smash into the bathroom door,
Stumble down the stairs and nearly break your neck,
By the time you reach the table you're a nervous wreck!
You cut yourself at breakfast with a butter knife,
Kiss the door "Good morning", and you slam your wife,
Stumble into work about an hour behind
And your boss is waitin' on the line!

Well, you work your way up to the top
And when you reach the top you drop
A notch or two behind the other guy.
And when you finally think you're "in"
You find that you are "out" again,
Another whole new wardrobe you must buy.
You're contemplating suicide
To end your life-long downward slide,
You think of what will happen when you die:
The "System" you hate so bad
Will take all the cash you had!

So you stick it out another day
And when you get your weekly pay
You chuckle at the numeral you see.
And after paying all the bills,
You try to cut out all the frills,
Stay home again at night and watch TV.
You figure if you scrimp and save
And maybe move into a cave
You still can buy some food (if it is free...)
So piss, and moan and complain!

Hey, Will: I have the sheet music to Whistling Rufus framed and hanging on the wall in my office. I hadn't heard it, so your guitar piece was a special delight.
