Folklore: A Ghost Thread

I've been reading "The Telltale Lilac Bush" a collection of ghost stories from West Virginia by Ruth Ann Musick.

It occurred to me there would be a world of ghost stories on the mudcat, and all I had to do was ask. So, I'm asking. Know any good ghost stories?

I heard many from my folks who came out of the hills of West Virginia in te 1800s but they called them Tokens of death and disaster and they really believed in them.I won't repeat them that is a phrase of my childhood I'd just as soon forget

I look forward to reading great stories on here. Love ghost threads. In the meantime, from the Ghosts of Halloweens Past and,

I Don't Believe in Ghosts, but...;

and, another: Experiences with Ghosts and the Paranormal; and, one more:

Just a Little Fun.

Thanks!

Louie, we cross-posted. I do find the historical references of great interest, esp. as some of my Colorado pioneers came from West VA. I understand your not wanting to bring it all up, though.

Kat thanks you I'm sure you listen to some of these stories and I hope you realize I was only 3 4 or 5 and we lived in the backwoods of Idaho so they did leave a fear of lots of things that weren't quite true or far fetched maybe they weren't but in their minds it was the gossip truth and you'd better believe it for they saw it with their own eyes

I started up a Folklore: Ghosts thread a couple of years back which features some contributions you might find interesting.

Best make that Folklore: Ghosts.

PS - Anyone planning to visit Blackpool Illuminations this year be sure to listen to the stories in the Haunted Blackpool feature.

from America: The Ballad Tales by Sharyn McCrumb send a shiver up my spine

From the UK: without a doubt Montague Rhodes James. When you look out of the corner of your eye it's there, when you look directly it isn't there, and remember any packages found in the road should be left where they are, especially if they contain hair or nail parings. Enough said......

In parenthesis, many common objects may be made the vehicles of retribution, and where retribution is not called for, of malice. Be careful how you handle the packet you pick up in the carriage-drive, particularly if it contains nail parings and hair. Do not, in any case, bring it into the house. It may not be alone... (Dots are believed by many writers of our day to be a good substitute for effective writing. They are certainly an easy one. Let us have a few more......)

Late on Monday night a toad came into my study: and, though nothing has so far seemed to link itself with this appearance, I feel that it may not be quite prudent to brood over topics which may open the interior eye to the presence of more formidable visitants. Enough said.
