Kenneth McKellar

Subject: Kenneth McKellar "English" translation
From: crooner in Chico, CA

My mom used to listen to these records by this Scottish singer during the 60s and I didn't think they were cool then, but now I appreciate them quite much (of course I was about 7 when she played them in 1967). There are a few songs that I like, and I think I figured the chords out, but since I'm from out here I can't understand all the words, because he's a Scot, and they speak in a tweaked way, relative to us in CA (you're not going to jump on me for that are you? I'm just having a sense of humor fun about it)...

This is all from memory...

There's a song that starts, "Far away and o'er the moor..." and closes off with "By the light of the peat fire flame" (must be the name of the song, Peat Fire Flame) but I can't remember the words, or that is, the words I remember are what John Carroll of the SF Chronicle calls mondegreens: gibberish that I substituted 'cause I didn't hear it right. Thanks for any help. I'd like to sing it for my mom on her birthday. If you know the chords, then gosh that'd be great, too!

Jean Redpath recorded that song also. I think the title on which she sings the Peat Fire Flame, is "Lilt for Laughter" - which comes from a line in the song.

It's in The Ceilidh Songbook maybe with notation and chords?

thanks, i was able to get a partiture, but no words, from Corryvrekan. The other two sites just list the titles; from the dance tunes directory i couldn't download for some reason whatever it was I needed for the song to play/lyrics to pop up. Will try later. thanks.

Of course if anyone has the lyrics i'd appreciate...

I've started a search for it (the lyrics). If I can't find it in the next few days, I'll try the State Library of Victoria when I visit there in about a week's time. They have a humungous collection of Scottish sheet music of this period, but unfortunately it is not electronically indexed. Regards, John

I've just added the lyrics to the other thread that Philippa has provided a link to, but I don't have the music; if you have time to make a midi, John, I'm told that it's in Songs of the Hebrides.

Here is the tune, as pirated from John Chambers' site linked above. I've stripped the chords, since they seemed to confuse mid2txt.

Looks like I'm a bit too late. Thanks Malcom, I've just re-opened this thread to report that it's in Songs Of The Hebrides Vol 3. As a slight change of subject I really must post the Inrex(es) to Songs of The Hebrides to the unpopular Index Thread I started a few weeks ago - at least the source would have come up on Super Search. So few of these songs are in the DT and I don't have the time to notate the individual tunes at the moment. Regards, John

If you do have time to post the indexes, that would be great.

Thanks Malcolm and Ivan. If anyone knows Crooner in Chico, California; please tell Crooner that the words of the Peat Fire flame are now on a mudcat thread.
