Possessing the observation and emotion of Burns combined with the wit and humour of McGinn, Davie has not yet received the recognition which he deserves. His most popular song, the brilliant love song of a hard man,"Star o' the Bar", has been covered by many, but Davie prefers the version by Irish traditional singer Rosie Stewart. He says that he never though it would be an Irish woman who would best interpret a Scots sang. Davie has printed out many of his songs on his site and allows their performance by anyone who cares about Scottish music. |

So I was delighted to (belatedly) discover Davie's 2003 Greentrax CD on sale at the excellent Coda music shop on the Mound in Edinburgh the other day; it may not have gone platinum, but this CD is solid gold. I think I once found a lovely song of his somewhere about the Union Canal, but I can't find it again now. I'd like to hear it if indeed it is one of Davie's songs. I believe his work deserves to be given a wider audience, but the Scottish music establishment has abdicated its responsibilities to Scots writing and song, preferring to hand out awards to tatty variety and pop acts masquerading as traditional musicians. |
