31 Oct 10 - 08:41 PM (#3020392) Subject: Tom Spiers @ Glasgow Ballad Workshop From: Anne Neilson After a super Hallowe'en workshop (with a third of the appropriately scary songs/poems from participants aged around 25!), interest in our next event on Sunday 28th November is high. Our guests then are Tom and Margaret Spiers from Aberdeen. Tom has been a significant performer (singing and fiddling -- sometimes at the same time!) since the 1960's and his wife Margaret (a more recent public performer) has absorbed songs from many of the most important traditional singers from the north-east. Tom's pedigree includes a long stint with one of the most influential Scottish groups, The Gaugers (with Arthur Watson and the late Peter Hall); and more recently with Arthur and Pete Shepheard of Springthyme Records as Shepheard, Spiers and Watson. His repertoire is firmly based in the north-east of Scotland and shows the influence of such famous folk luminaries as Jeannie Robertson, Jimmy McBeath, Lizzie Higgins etc. We already have a goodly number of advance bookings, but would like to open this out to a wider audience. I haven't heard her sing as yet, but that's another pleasure to look forward to. What has delighted us is the response of our younger ballad workshop participants at our recent guest events with Sheila Stewart and Ray Fisher -- almost mesmerised by veteran performers (and I know they won't mind that description) who command respect by their real and passionate commitment to their tradition. And Tom's event will be no different! (We've already sold more than half the tickets.) |

We've already booked almost two thirds of the tickets -- and just under half of that number are aged under 35! VERY encouraging for the future of unaccompanied song, as I can personally guarantee that all of those in attendance will raise their voices at some point in the afternoon (in a chorus if not quite up for a solo). Should be a grand event. |

But all the weather forecasts are suggesting bad things for tomorrow and so -- with great regret -- we are cancelling this event altogether. Apologies to all who had already booked (your pre-paid bookings will be honoured in the New Year) and we hope that you'll keep your eyes open for exciting news about January events. |
