'Lost' recordings of Charles Chilton

'Lost' recordings of musical docu-dramas by Charles Chilton; last heard on the NZBC - National Programme in the 1970s - are now at:

http://www.mediafire.com/?t9ics9twjofe6

* Oh - What a Lovely War! by Charles Chilton. In memory of all of those who served and died in the trenches of WW1.

* Botany Bay by Charles Chilton. The founding of New South Wales, Australia.

* The Victory by Charles Chilton. A musical presentation about HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship.

* Musical Portrait of London by Charles Chilton.

With reference to the below Wiki entry I wonder if any other recordings have survived in the public domain?

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Chilton

Of particular interest would be the following:

* Shakespeare's London
* Dickens' London
* London's Pleasure Gardens
* Cries of London
* Ballad History of Samuel Pepys

P.S. Many of the Journey into Space programmes are at TheBox.bz

In particular, at this time, I recommend listening to:

Charles Chilton - Oh What A Lovely War.mp3

This musical presentation is in memory of all of those who served and died in the trenches of WW1.

Worth downloading and listening to as we approach Nov 11.

As we rapidly approach Australia Day on Jan 26, this is a timely reminder of the remarkable survival of a 'lost' and unknown musical docu-drama entitled 'Botany Bay - the Founding of New South Wales' by Charles Chilton.

It is available at:

http://www.mediafire.com/?4fy06agos97k2t8

This was originally recorded from the NZBC National Programme in the early 1970s.

It would be a good project to re-create and record this perhaps with local Australian singers. Perhaps the original script still exists at the British Library Sound Archives? Maybe the original disc still exists?!!

I would also be interested if someone could transcribe the recording into text for a web page.

Meanwhile this is the ONLY version available.

Chris B.

BBC Radio 4 Extra are repeating a number of Charles Chilton programmes. Some details are here:

The Charles Chilton Collection

The Long, Long Trail is available to listen to for a further 3 days

The Cockney is available to listen to for a further 6 days

Victorian Top of the Pop is available to listen for a further 5 days

Just follow the links on the page.

The page also has a link to an Archive on 4 programme about The Long, Long Trail.

As usual Mediafire down't work with any browser I can use. I can see the files are there, but clicking the download button does nothing except bring up a load of advertising popups.

Any chance of these appearing on Dropbox or Box.net?

(BBC IPlayer doesn't work for me either).

Have you tried to listen to the programmes on the BBC site Jack? I assume that you are not in the UK but BBC Radio programmes are normally available worldwide via the iplayer (unlike the TV programmes)

The IPlayer doesn't work, like I said. It requires a version of Flash that my machine's OS doesn't support, and no upgrade is feasible. I can't watch any BBC video (not much loss, I can usually find the same content elsewhere).

I'd rather burn the MP3s to CD anyway, so I don't have to sit in front of the computer to listen.

The Mediafire website tells me
"The file you requested has been removed from MediaFire for a violation of our Terms of Service."
That's different from Jack's experience.

The programmes currently available on the BBC website don't seem to include the Botany Bay one.

The directory listing on Mediafire

http://www.mediafire.com/?t9ics9twjofe6

has four files, but "Downloads: 0" for all of them. So it doesn't look like anybody else has done better than me. Maybe the only difference using another browser makes is that you get different error messages.

Tried again, and I now have all four. REALLY tedious process with the stupidest ads imaginable getting in the way and I've no idea what I did differently that made it work.

There's a bit less than 100MB in all and if anybody can handle that much email I can pass it on.

http://www.mediafire.com/?t9ics9twjofe6 seems to work OK for me.
Strangely though, despite both Jack's and my downloads, it still reports "Downloads: 0"

And if you perform anything from OWALW, add a special curse for a certain Minister, from one of the original production team, please.

the second URL (blickie) worked but not a copy & paste fro the OP.

Always liked Charles Chilton's documentaries but not "Journey into Space" but we never heard it at school (boarding/orphanage) for many reasons. I don't think JiS has survived the test of time.

BBC Radio 4 extra repeated the Long Long Trailer and the documentary about the programme over the weekend. They are available to listen to on the BBC iplayer

Charles Chilton - The Long, Long Trail

That is available for another 4 weeks from today

On a slight tangent...

A few years back I had the fortune/misfortune of following Charles as part of a music hall line up. His performance had me in stitches which was a problem as I needed to keep a straight face for my serio-comedy number.

I only met him once, but he was one of the most generous spirited people I ever met.

It's the trailer, but what about It's a Long Long Trail itself?

There's some useful software here, for those of you who have a personal need to study this properly.

I thought so - those arrangements were done by the George Mitchell Minstrels! Very recognisable voices for those of us who were in our childhood then.
