The run is long over but some late comer to the party some into the mouth of the creek. Used and egg sack ... I didn't weight him but he was heavy in the net to say the least. Fat fish... I got a story for ya Dan. One Labour Day I was a long ways back on the Boise-Cascade lumber roads NW of Miramichi. The new road skirted the old road where a timber bridge was washed out at a small brook. Shortly after daylight I baited my hook in a fashion I use a lot. I take a section of a small trout about 3/4" long just ahead of the tail and thread the hook along the backbone and back up through the skin so the hook "sticks out" and then thread it back through the skin so the barb is back in the flesh. I was at the egde of the bridge facing the sun and dropped the hook in. BANG! I whipped the rod up and the trout flew off the line when the line was at it's apex... three times in less than 15 seconds. Breakfast in 15 seconds. I caught about 20 trout that day without baiting the hook again. Of course, that only works when they are truly hungry. |

What I like is this , I go down a very steep hill to a small creek. Busted me arse a couple of times getting down there. No one fishes it ... kinda like my private fishing hole. Out of the way and not easy in or out. Nobody thinks these big guys can get up that small creek ... Ahhh yea they can, But trying to play a fish this size running up and down the creek is a battle. He can break you off hitting rocks and tree limbs and every other darn thing in that little creek. There are places the water has to be 2 inches deep ... then a couple of holes, 9 ft and then long stretches of 5-6 inches. This guy was under a ledge in about 3 ft of water and headed right up to the deeper pool like a rocket ... maybe 20 yards from the mouth of the lake ... |

LOL These guys are really Wiley critters ... the water is so darn clear, any movement, shadow, any noise, they scat ... I can't use a sinker, the will scat when you cast. I go way above very quiet and float an egg sack down .. then they will look at it .. fin around it ... and decide hey lunch ... many time man vs fish, fish usually win. I guess they didn't get so darn big being stupid. Most of the time I will streamer fly for these guys but not this late in the year. Eggs sacks are the only way to go |

They don't average the size we see in the fall ... most in the mid twenties and probably average 20 inches or so in the spring. The fall you get this big hogs that come in. |

Minds me of one time I was following my BiL back up a small stream near Fundy National Park. He hadn't caught many as he was bait fishing and it was early July... 30C and full sun... time for fly fishin in fast or deep water. As he went by a 16" speckle in the rapids it bolted and was coming straight down the middle of the stream... where I was. He musta seen me at the last minute (they swim a million miles an hour) and changed course, whereupon he hit a rock and flipped out of the water onto the gravel bank. I hollered and easily grabbed him as he was out cold. My BiL said, "Oh fer fuck sake! Fly fishin, okay, but flyin fish fishin? Jaysus!" That same day, on the way down the brook, I was skippin right along as I had a pair of sneakers with felts glued to the bottom. BiL was trying to keep up, not knowing I had felts. He fell a number of times and I kept telling him he had to walk faster to not slip. yes, it was a bit cruel but it was also good fun. Them city boys, eh? My bro had chest waders on one trip. I told him they were dangerous unless he was fishing in slow water on a wide stream. Bro never could handle constructive criticism. And he had no felts! When he fell in a pool it was a sight. As he was trying to climb out with the waders FULL of water, he would lean forward and slosh the water in the waders backward which would cause him to pitch backward. Then the reverse would occur. It was like watching a pendulum. Finally, I yelled,`Drop the fucking waders off yer shoulders!` He was rather pissed when he got out. And, I tried not to laugh... I tried, really. |

I never heard of anyone catching anything even close but that is what they say ... I have heard of 15 pounders for sure quite frequently ... Our state record is 32 lbs I believe. |

What I do and pretty much every serious fisherman does is immediately dispatch the fish with a blow to the head, clean it, and place it on a stringer in the water. Creeks are very cold and will keep them perfect. If they are dispatched and carried around they will get strong and will taste fishy. No one should attempt to keep it alive by any means that is cruel. Immediately dispatch the fish. I let everything go except for a couple that I will keep for someone. I myself don't like the taste of pretty much any fish except Friday fish fry of haddock. Smoked salmon is ok but again everyone raves over my smoked salmon but I don't really get too excited over it either. I am a meat and potatoes guy I guess. With this fish I got two boneless fillets about 2+ pounds each. Very pink very beautiful fish. I will give it to my old uncle who has been bugging me all season hence I kept it. I would love to keep them and send them to catters, the last batch I sent out cost 62 dollars to overnight so I really can't do that - I sure wish I could. |
