Baker Street is one of those songs from my younger days that immediately brings memories. I still carry it on my ipod and sometimes in the morning when I need a kick in the arse to get going, I put it on the Bose and crank it up. When the sax kicks in, I do the same....... **chuckle*** ....... and when you are a man "of a certain size" that can be a very funny moment.

It doesn't look good for Gerry, but I hope he gets well.

Talented guy. Apart from writing Baker Street, I believe he also composed the famous sax riff.
I saw him as a Humblebum ( with Billy Connolly) years ago.
I do hope he pulls through and goes on to write some more great songs.

I watched him on BBC4 Singer Songwriters singing 'Can I have me money back' recently. Always liked his stuff. I hope things go well for him.

Telling us we are all one.

The Ark    the ark

See the dark night has come down on us
The world is living in its dream
But now we know that we can wake up from this sleep
And set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way.

The time has come to trust that guiding light
And leaving all the rest behind
We'll take the road that leads down to the waterside
And set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way.

And we'll sail out on the water
Yes we'll feel the sea grow
Yes we'll meet out on the water
Where all strangers are known.

If you travel blindly, if you fall
The truth is there to set you free
And when your heart can see just one thing in this life
We'll set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way.

And we'll sail out on the water
Yes we'll feel the sea grow
Yes we'll meet out on the water
Where all strangers are known.

See the dark night has come down on us
The world is living in its dream
But now we know that we can wake up from this sleep
And set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way.

And we'll sail out on the water
Yes we'll feel the sea grow
Yes we'll meet out on the water
Where all strangers are known.

So many great songs as well as Baker Street and one of the best voices of his generation.

Hope he pulls through.

My mum died of this due to her diabetes,my wife due to her love of a tipple, the landlady of my local was taken into hospital(again due to her affection for alcohol) and is still alive and lively as ever. So if they have caught him in time we may be able to enjoy some further songs from him.

Richie Black posted this on a different thread, and I hope he doesn't mind that I've started a new one so that more people will see the sad news.

"Just received an email from Joe Egan telling me that Gerry Rafferty is seriously ill and doctors are not holding out much hope. I first met Gerry as a young busker in Glasgow in the 1960's, he was one of the finest folk singers I ever met. I don't know if any of you will recall a Scottish folk group called The Humblebums, they were a permanent fixture in the Old Scotia Bar in Glasgow, some great acts went through that place."

Met Gerry when Billy introduced him into the Humblebums with Tam Harvey.....He took them in a totally different direction....muych to Tam's disgust.

The club audiences didn't take to Gerry for a while....his beautiful contemplative, compositions were hard work efter half a crate o' Tennants lager!

I still look on him and Joe Egan as two of the very best contemporary folk writers and performers.
Gerry's music suffered I feel, from over production...too much going on for folk and too intellectual for the pop masses.
Gerry rates "The right moment", not "Baker Street" as his best composition and I agree 100%....I can never go very long without putting on the "Sleepwalking" LP, closing my eyes and letting memories of lost love come flooding back.

All the best Gerry, we'll never hear the West of Scotland spirit better expressed....Ake.

Thanks for combining the threads.

I hope they have caught Gerry's problem in time. Keith was lucky that the two large kidney stones he had (not painful because they didn't move) were discovered before they caused permanent kidney damange.

All the best Gerry.

There was a slight improvement in his condition this morning, although doctors say he is still seriously ill. Thoughts very much with Enzina, Jim and family at this time.

A brilliant and underrated artist - he should be known for more than one song. A Dangerous Age is one of my favourite tracks of all time - pure class.

Here's hoping he's gets through this.
