Searchers legend Tony West dies in his sleep
Nov 11 2010 by Tom Duffy, Liverpool Echo

SIXTIES legend Tony West has died 'peacefully in his sleep'
during the night at his Hightown home.

Sandi West, who married Tony in 1998, said to the ECHO that
she had lost 'a good man with real integrity.'

Tony West was 72 years old and a founder member of
Merseybeat band The Searchers.

His family told the ECHO that the showbusiness promoter had
been in 'good health' recently, and completed a training
routine at his Kirkby gym on Monday.

Tony attended St Mary's College in Crosby in Crosby, and
went to enjoy a successful showbusiness career.

The life-long Liverpool FC fan was a personal friend of Bill
Shankly.

He established Tony West Entertainments in 1976.

Must have been a very early member of the band as there's no mention of him on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Searchers_(band)

Original members at the time of the hit record (Sweets for my Sweet) were John McNally (who still leads the group today), Mike Pender, Tony Jackson and drummer Norman McGarry. Tony Jackson soon left to form his own group,"The Vibrations". Norman McGarry went next to join (I think) Peter and Gordon. After the hit making days, Mike Pender left to form his own group, "Mike Pender's Searchers" (this caused some confusion at the time). John McNally carried on with numerous line-ups to the present day. No idea when Tony West joined. He doesn't appear to be in the current line-up.

Tony, who was from Waterloo, was born in 1938, and attended St Mary's College in Crosby before completing his National Service during the 1950s in West Germany.

He soon became involved in Liverpool's skiffle scene after the army and then joined The Searchers as their bass player.

However, he left the band in the early 1960s before they enjoyed a period of international fame during the Merseybeat sensation that exploded a couple of years later.

When history is written it is important that it is accurate.
Well done Arthur for filling us all in.

Sorry to hear about Tony West's death. I never met him but spoke to him a few times on the phone regarding comp tickets for the Searchers shows when I was reviewing for a local paper. He came over as a very nice man and was always very helpful.
