From: Roger the Skiffler The BBC reports (though there is nothing on the Club website)that the 100 Club at 100 Oxford St., London (Formerly Mac's and the Humphrey Lytelton Club)is to close at Xmas. The press note that it was the venue where early punk bands made their debut but in the days when I was a frequent visitor (first time 1968 to see Ken Colyer, then through the first half of the 1970s)it was a jazz venue 5 or 6 nights a week, mainly traditional to mainstream. We used to see Alex Welsh about once a month and all the bands of the day & singers like George Melly, Beryl Bryden, Ottilie Patterson and visiting US stars like Terry & McGhee. (London) From: GUEST,Hootenanny For some years now the 100 club has only been a shadow of it's former self putting on pop and rock people. OK so the world changes but some real giants of the Jazz and Blues music scene appeared there over the years. Most of the best of British jazzmen have appeared there as have a great number of Americans. Geat nights in particular were when Muddy Waters brought over his full band. What a night that was. Howling Wolf was another, then there was the night Lowel Fulson was on and B B King happened to be in town and joined him for a few numbers. Then there was Buck Clayton with Humph, Bud Freeman, the full Johnny Otis band, I could go on and on but sadly I guess that the club is doomed. A vote of thanks is due to Roger Horton who kept the club going during it's heyday and supported such great music in the Jazz and Blues world and even on the odd rare occasion some great Bluegrass. I was last there in May for a memorial concert for George Webb who apart from being a pioneer of the British jazz scene also managed Jazzshows for a while and organised many of the blues artist's British tours. George sadly departed earlier this year at the age of 92. Sorry if I rambled on. Hoot |

(London) From: Roger the Skiffler I always remember Alex Welsh used to say "It's nice to be back at Jazzshows again" long after it had become 100 Club. He also used to say "and here's one for the dancers" when the crowd was shoulder to shoulder. We used to get home stinking of fag smoke and chinese food! Happy days. RtS |
