BS: The relevancy delusion....

Subject: BS: The relevancy delusion....
From: Little Hawk

Post here and add your bit to the great Internet Relevancy Delusion. Join millions of other opinionated people who are in search of a life online, but can't find one. Take issue with other people's beliefs, their lifestyle, and their politics. Go on and on about it. Think that you can and should change them. Imagine that you are being relevant. ;-D

Imagine that you can create a Very Important Point of View from which you can instruct others on the triviality and confusedness of their inadequate perspectives, generously and benevolently filling them in on how things would look if only they were a little more elevated, like you.

Then, imagine you are a perfect ass, condescending and didactic.

But I repeat myself...

"But is all this true?' said Brutha.

Didactylos shrugged. 'Could be. Could be. We are here and it is now. The way I see it is, after that, everything tends towards guesswork.'

You mean you don't KNOW it's true?' said Brutha.

I THINK it might be,' said Didactylos. 'I could be wrong. Not being certain is what being a philosopher is all about."

I for one believe in Terry Pratchett.

But then there's Amos. That sucker is rammed so far up his own coal chute that he don't even realize he's addicted, so he don't get hostile, he just gets cute and starts usin' a lotta big words and actin' like he is Al Gore's top speech writer or somethin' along that line. When he can't handle the pressure of maintainin' that big false front no longer, he skips off down to Mexico and goes on a major bender and has illicit relations with proskirts like you-know-who...

Illogical as it may sound LH although we can all fall out grand style and do things we regret, we are all relevant. Can be tough to work out though...

It could (actually with you it isn't) be the easiest thing in the world to think someone with different beliefs is a thoughtless twit - and believe me I have been down that route...

As said in another thread, I can only present my beliefs if a subject crops up, perhaps at times defend my beliefs when they are attacked but for me to MAKE another person believe what I do is an exercise in futility. It gets nobody anywhere.

Yes, Jon, we are in truth all relevant...in a spiritual sense...and we are relevant as individuals. ;-) That doesn't, however, mean that people's hostile blather on the usual political and anti-religious threads here is terribly relevant...generally speaking they are just venting, in my opinion, hanging out their dirty mental laundry and defending it to a world which, frankly, doesn't care.

But I enjoy talking with you, because you seem to be a person of goodwill. You bother to attempt to demonstrate goodwill, and that's all that's needed to have a worthwhile conversation.

Those who are almost chronically in a state of badwill here, however, and there are quite a few of them...I enjoy making fun of them, rattling the bars of their little cages, pulling their chains, as it were. And they always react in a suitable manner, of course, which makes it worth the effort.

Bee-Dubya-Ell - "Relevance isn't determined by the transmitter, but by the receiver. The most profound wisdom is irrelevant if nobody pays any attention to it. The lamest tripe is relevant if someone takes it to heart."

Whoa! Well said, Bee-dub. You clearly have your thinking cap on tonight. That is indeed the common perception of relevance. I'd say, though, that something is truly relevant if it has a useful application, whereas it isn't if it doesn't.

Example:

Some people wish to catch a bird. But they are having a hard time to do it. Someone says, "Put salt on the bird's tale!" Okay...is that relevant to the problem? No. Even if 95 out of 100 people think it is, even if all 100 think so, it still isn't relevant, because it won't work! What if someone else proposes a method that actually does work? Well, then what he has proposed is relevant, and that can be demonstrated soon enough just by trying it...and it's relevant even if those 100 people don't think it is. They will find out that it's relevant when it works.

I think the only thing relevant in this thread and maybe to its author is whether, in his opinion, enough attention is being paid to him and his imaginary friends.

If two or more other people are arguing, he doesn't have to read it. Heck I don't read half the stuff written by some people who think they are arguing with me.

Just once, just once! on this forum I would like to have a real talk about Apes or Canadian rednecks without fake ones butting in.

THE IRRELEVANT MAN
(with apologies!)

Sometime when you're feeling relevant,
Sometime when your ego's in bloom,
Sometimes when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified in the room.

Sometimes when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul.

Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to your wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that's remaining
Is a measure of how you'll be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop, and you'll find that in no time
It looks quiet the same as before.

The moral in this quaint example
Is do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself, but remember---
There's no irelevant man.

:-P

You're right that it's not relevant to the problem, but the fact that so many people believe it's relevant makes it a problem unto itself. If everybody tries to put salt on birds' tails there are bound to be consequences. Like if everybody's concentrating on following birds around trying to shake salt onto their tails and not paying attention to where they're going, somebody's gonna get run over by a bicycle. At the very least, the stores will run out of salt. And if that happens, nobody will want to eat French fries 'cause they really suck without salt.

It's sorta like Dick Cheney. I think he's irrelevant, but there's a big chunk of the American populace who thinks he is relevant. I'm pretty sure one of the people who thinks he's relevant is the asshole who happens to be my U.S. Congressman. The fact that said asshole is empowered to make decisions on my behalf makes what Mr. Cheney says relevant to my situation, whether I like it or not.

About relevancy on the Internet...

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14582/

Christian Anti-Porn 1.0.7 Firefox addon...

More about this add-on

Flee sexual immorality (1Co 6:18).

Christian Anti-Porn will filter links and alert the user if any porn websites are clicked. This will not completely block but rather display Bible verse with the crucified Jesus Christ and to remind every Christian that he is going to crucify Jesus Christ again if he proceeds to such websites.

This add-on is not an ultimate filter for porn. God is the ultimate filter and only He can guard you and give you enough grace to overcome sin. Hence, pray to Jesus Christ who died for our sins.

Localizations: English, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, French, German, Korean, Greek, Russian, Italian and Tamil.

Developer Comments

WARNING: This add-on is useful only for Christians. When other people saw Christ in them (followers of Christ), they called them as Christians. These are the true, Bible only, non-compromising Christians who are ready to give their lives to Christ and to live a sinless life. This add-on will be useless to anyone calling themselves as Christians and yet having no Christ in them. However, this add-on will be useful to anyone who wishes to come out of their false Christian livelihood to truly live in Christ without sinning esp. pornography on the Internet.

As I already said in description, this is not the ultimate porn filter. God is the ultimate porn filter, so pray to Him and He will give you the Holy Spirit who will convict you in your heart when you are about to sin. Ask Him His grace which will help you overcome any sin. God bless You.

Review

I'd LOVE to see an ULTIMATE RELIGION FILTER... Ugh. Garbage! BTW, no one can live a "sinless life". That's why Jesus died on the cross. Because humans SIN. You are WARPED!

Now that's relevant. As Mark Twain might say, seeing that elephant would tend to concentrate one's mind wonderfully.

"That elephant is unquestionably relevant."

Then it shouldn't be hear (unless it's a delusion).

A deeper definition of irrelevancy: getting pissy about other people talking about things you find irrelevant. And then telling them about it.

Actually, it appears that Little Hawk doesn't find the debates here irrelevant at all. If he thinks so, why start a whole thread about it?

John,

Little Hawk
Just liked to talk
No matter what about
He'll spout
Pearls of wisdom
Before us swines
So pay no attention
To his whines
For sure as night turns into day
He will always find nonsense to say.

LH, intelligent dialogue is always relevant. Demonizing is not. Critical thinking is necessary to a healthy functioning society.

I think that this was what Jon Stewart was attempting to say and I commend to you the interview with Rachel Madow given to Stewart. You can find it on YouTube or on the net.

In the meantime, the delusion is the shutting off of legitimate dialogue thinking that somehow this is irrelevant just because agreement is not reached.

I agree that no minds may be changed but this is not a reasonable goal of dialogue.
The right to question, criticize and examine contradictory ideas is always a sign of
a healthy democracy and staves off the excesses of theocratic and reactionary thinking.

Stewart was very two faced in that interview and would not directly and clearly answer her questions. He screwed up the message of his own rally. He got called on it and then he went on Maddow to try to do damage control.

And btw contrary to what he said he is no Jerry Seinfeld. His show is 8 minutes of watered down Olbermann, 6 minutes of predictable sketches with his corespondents and 8 minutes of kissing the ass of someone selling a book.

Definitely delusional. (Harvey agrees)

This is what "relevant" means.

rel·e·vant
   /ˈrɛləvənt/ Show Spelled[rel-uh-vuhnt] Show IPA
–adjective
bearing upon or connected with the matter in hand; pertinent: a relevant remark.

It does NOT mean "conforming to the sensibilities of Mudcat.org busybodies."

"Stewart was very two faced in that interview and would not directly and clearly answer her questions."

This is not true. He did answer her questions by saying that demonizing sheds no light but heat on issues.

" He screwed up the message of his own rally. He got called on it and then he went on Maddow to try to do damage control."

No, he went on Madow to clarify his position which was distorted by pundits.

"And btw contrary to what he said he is no Jerry Seinfeld. His show is 8 minutes of watered down Olbermann, 6 minutes of predictable sketches with his corespondents and 8 minutes of kissing the ass of someone selling a book."

Olbermann is very entertaining so this would be a good model of Jon. Nothing could be more predictable than Seinfeld.

I'm glad that Jon is presenting books since Americans seemingly have forgotten how to read let alone think.

I disagree with this appraisal of Stewart. Fortunately, Rachel had the sense to have him on her show.
