20 Nov 10 - 03:59 AM (#3036508) Subject: RE: MGAS gotta Gig Bracknell UK 23 Nov 2010 From: My guru always said This week has been tricky and I'd been wondering whether I'd be able to sing at Bracknell, but there is now light at the end of the tunnel. You know how things go in threes? It's so true!! Last Sunday, after a very hectic weekend with friends, I broke a tooth while we were out at a Carvery. That's the 1st thing. When we got home afterwards I started to shiver. That's the 2nd thing. I'd had a sore throat all weekend, but within an hour or so my temperature was 101 degrees. Feeling dreadful I phoned my Manager to let him know I wouldn't be in on Monday, he needed the warning. The next 30 odd hours I felt as weak as a kitten, lounging around trying to rest and not really knowing what to do with myself. At 4am on Tuesday I awoke in agonising back & muscle pain. This is the third thing!! My hips had displaced (again) but this time the pain was so bad I couldn't get any respite at all. Not from lying on either side, on my back or front, standing, sitting or just walking. After an hour of this all I wanted was morphine, NOW! Having had this bad back (2 badly prolapsed discs in just the wrong place) since the early 80's I'm pretty used to it. But this was something else entirely and stretched me to my limits. It was a choice of getting to a hospital or waiting to see if my Chiropractor could help me. Somehow I got through the 5 hours till 9am when I felt I could reasonably phone him. He was there and could see me straightaway. Thankfully, because of my back I drive an automatic, so I got there, teeth firmly gritted & eyes streaming with tears of pain. He started the 'fix' that morning & I've seen him twice since then and am on the mend now. £150 in total, but absolutely necessary. My tooth? Well that needs a crown, so that's £200 on the NHS. And as for the remnants of the flu virus, it seems to be on the way out now and I should be OK to sing at Bracknell. I'm starting to look forward to it again now *grin* |
20 Nov 10 - 05:30 AM (#3036537) Subject: RE: MGAS gotta Gig Bracknell UK 23 Nov 2010 From: Fidjit Bit of pain. Hole in the wallet. Wellcome to the club. All sounds normal to me Hillary. Chas |

20 Nov 10 - 02:10 PM (#3036856) Subject: RE: MGAS gotta Gig Bracknell UK 23 Nov 2010 From: Fidjit Hils. You want to hear what happened to me ? Returning home from trip to England (melodeons at Witney workshops) Get to car. Glasses drop on concrete and smash glass New ones £300. Drive car 3 hours to within 500 yards of my door and a deer crashes into car. Smashed headlight dented front split wing Etc. Etc. Insurance says not worth repairing so going to give me some cash for the wreck. Trouble is. Car is still drivable. Sob. Sob. Chas |

Feeling much better now & dosing myself up with a mixture of Benylin, Echinacea and Hot Toddies - not all at the same time I must admit. I recently put up a few more Sound Bits on my webpage. There are so many good songs out there, I just wish I had enough time (and memory) to learn them quicker... Really looking forward to Bracknell on Tuesday, thanks for all the support! |

Well, my head cold is definitely on it's way out and I'm pretty sure I can sing some songs tonight without too much coughing etc. There's an 'empty' feeling when I breathe in too deeply so I'll have to be careful with my breath control. I'm sure that the age-old remedy of lots of water (with echinacea) and sipping port & brandy should help me get through the evening. I'll try not to break a leg *grin* I am so looking forward to this now and I've picked out some wonderful stories to sing along with some great chorus songs. Many thanks to everyone for your kind words!!! |

24 Nov 10 - 05:03 AM (#3039316) Subject: RE: MGAS gotta Gig Bracknell UK 23 Nov 2010 From: My guru always said I will, Maeve Dear, thankyou for asking! What a lovely club, it was an absolute pleasure to sing there last night. Though it wasn't crowded (it's a small friendly venue), each person there was a Folkie through and through with plenty of talent amongst the floorspots. Many thanks for your support Terry!! Despite the remnants of the virus I managed to sing my songs, with the aid of a couple of glasses of port (medicinal of course) and plenty of water to sip. From the reaction of the Folkies there and a couple of emails I received when I got home, it looks like we all enjoyed the evening. I know that I did!!! Just in case anyone's interested, here's a list of the songs I sang: Wayfaring Stranger - Trad?? Hunting Witches - Maureen McGuinness (heard from Martin Dent, Unicorn Man on the MudCat) Beachcomber - Simon Cowe (heard from Jenny Burkitt) The Bergen - Jez Lowe Dear Diary - John Warner (heard from Alie Byrne, Daughter on the MudCat) Scrubbing the Miners Clothers - John Warner (heard from Margaret Walters) Jenny Greenteeth - Nicole Murray (50% of Cloudstreet on the MudCat) Battlefield Tree - Lucy Burrow (Hawker on the MudCat) When Fishes Fly - collected by Cecil Sharpe (heard from Mary Humphreys on the MudCat) The Snows they melt the soonest - Thomas Doubleday Thaney - Karine Polwart The Higgler - Tony Franklin Searching for Lambs - Trad? Where Ravens Feed - Graeme Miles (heard from Martyn Wyndham-Reed) By the end of the evening my voice was considerably weaker than at the start, but hopefully I should be able to manage my sets on Saturday at Bedworth Folk Festival. Many thanks again to everyone for their support and encouragement, I felt the need of it this past week and have been glad of it. Hils |

You obviously bagged all the locals! Still I enjoyed Aron "Big Azza" Woodall and his Delta Groove, including guest drummer, the mighty Sam Kelly (thanks for the drink, Sam).Shame Brackenll FC always clashes with my blues night.
