Lyr Req: Long Preston Sal

Subject: Long Preston Sal
From: Tim Salt

I've just got back from the Topsham Folk Club, Globe Hotel, Topsham nr Exeter (every Sunday 8.30 p.m.)and of course have been talking about songs. One of the organisers, Pete (the heckler) Hargrave has a daughter who has just bought a pub in Settle, Yorkshire. She is living in the village of Long Preston, just outside Settle and Pete is convinced there is a song called Long Preston Sal but I can't find it. Can anyone help out there please?

It's "Long Preston Peg, the proud Preston whore", but most copies are expurgated.

There's a fragment on the internet.
Go to geocities.com/~spandoudi/poems/ballads.html

Then scan down the titles list to "Long Preston Peg" and click on it. [Bell's 'Ancient Poems, Ballads and Songs', near the end of the book.]
