29 Aug 99 - 08:49 PM (#109590) Subject: Accordion/Irish-Bohemian rhapsody!?? From: katlaughing Just wondering if anyone else heard this really strange rendition of the QUEEN song, Bohemian Rhapsody?? It was played on Thistle & Shamrock, Frankie Galvin(?)& friends, accordion with whistle and fiddle thrown in, no voices. It was billed as the Irish trad version. Fiona was going on about humour and fun in trad music; quoting jokes about bagpipes, etc. and using this as a "fun" example, I guess. I cannot decide if it sounded like Muzak, carousel music, or a mix of some decent trad and crap! It was a really strange arrangement. Wondering why they bothered to play that when there is some much better music for such instruments? I like BR when done by Queen, but this mostly sounded ridiculous! Freddy Mercury must be turning over in his grave! Have any of you tried it out? She is playing a fun song, now, all about a young girl who thought someone was her young man, when her mum and he slipped out and got married. The main line is "now I have to call him Father." kat |

Just checked and it was "Hibernian Rhapsody" with apologies to Freddie M. by De Danann and friends. The music hall song was sung by Mary Black's mother, Patty and was charming. |

From: Mbo I am a HUGE fan of Queen as well as Celtic (ESPECIALLY the Thistle and Shamrock) and I thought De Danann's version ruled! When that tin whistle started playing the vocal line it 'sent shivers down my spine'! Also the transcription of Brian May's guitar solo to fiddle was awesome! De Danann is one of my favorite bands, and their Celtic version of "Hey Jude" is just as great as "Hibernian Rhapsody." Personally, I thought it was done masterfully, besides, De Danann said they didn't want anyone to take it too seriously anyway! Lighten up! "Radio--someone still loves you" |

ABBA's Dancing Queen sounded nice when we did it at the folk club a few weeks back... fiddle, accordian, and guitar... *grin* I transcribed most of the De Danann "Hey Jude"... changed the last part though I made a reel out of Hey Jude and finished it off with the "Na-na-na- nananana" bit. slainte alison |
