Long Player-LP Records

Early this evening I used the term 'LP' in a post. Does anyone else mourn their passing?

Everytime I look at the old AR with the Marantz amp and a pair of Warfendales.

I miss the old 12" square albums covers, with highly visible artwork and extensive and legible liner notes, more than I miss the scratchable vinyl.

They're not entirely gone. I have an acquaitance, 35 years old, who does a DJ act with nothing but LP's. There are others like him.

LP's are still coming out, but in a trickle. My Sunday paper had an article about it some months ago. There are people who eagerly await each new arrival.

I had no idea they were still produced. 45rpm 'singles' are still made for the dance scene but I thought 12" vinyl was dead.

I don't miss getting up every 15-25mins to turn them over, nor the covers getting shabbier every time you handle them, nor cleaning them before you play them, nor the pops and crackles because you didn't clean them once...
No, I don't think I do. I'm slowly and tediously turning about 100 of mine into CDs. Playable as CDs, but just one file on each.

I still buy them - picked up a cracker at a s/h bookshop just the other day. I also buy CDs and do downloads. Horses for courses.

LPs are still being produced by musicians in the rock industry - alongside CD albums. Early digital mastering and re-mastering was often very brittle and lacked the warmth and ambience of vinyl recording, but that's improved over the years.

One thing's for sure. The longevity of CDs is still open to some question, and I've had one or two fail. The longevity of vinyl, as long as it's cared for, is not. A friend of mine sold all his LPs when CDs appeared on the market - and bought the same titles on CD! I kept all mine, and a great deal of the folk stuff on the Topic, Transatlantic and Leader/Trailer labels - in decent condition - is worth quite a few quid.

It's worth pointing out that the digital industry pundits have also been predicting the death of the book for many years - they're still around...

The LP has been making a comeback for years. From this Wikipedia page :

In the United Kingdom, sales of new vinyl records (particularly 7 inch singles) have increased significantly in recent years, somewhat reversing the downward trend seen during the 1990s. Vinyl is also more and more popular in ... musical genres such as hardcore punk, alt-metal, or indie rock. Limited vinyl editions of new albums or EPs are prized by fans even though the music is not related in any way to DJing or audiophiles.

In the United States, annual vinyl sales increased by 85.8% between 2006 and 2007, and by 89% between 2007 and 2008.

Figures released in the United States in early 2009 showed that sales of vinyl albums nearly doubled in 2008, with 1.88 million sold - up from just under 1 million in 2007.

I still buy LPs - there's a steady trickle of KIcking Mule amongst others through my local Oxfam. Much easier to look after and keep in order - if I can't find an LP it's probably a few places away from where it should be in the rack, unlike CDs which could be anywhere and have jewel cases which constantly need replaced.

We had thousands until last Christmas. Now a thoughtful friend is storing some LPs given to us by another good friend, and we have bought a very few special LPs, trusting we'll eventually have a place for them.

Still have my Connoisseur turntable, Transcriptors arm from back wnen, now Nagoaka MP50 cartridge is it and a sideboard full of LPs.
Gave up smoking to buy that turntable and never smoked since. Still works fine with massive KEF speakers.

I love LPs. Rather play an LP than a CD any day. The problem is that much of my vinyl, has been played past being listenable...I mean we're talking 'bout some dating to early 1950s, here, and, I was none to gentle sometimes. But those that are clean are gems that I prefer to the same material digitized. They have an ambiance and warmth, but not the crystal clarity of CDs; thats a good trade-off for me.

I listen on a Sansui 35/35 watt receiver that's over 30 years old, and a Luxman TT w/ Grado cartridge and stylus. Owing to lack of space, the speakers are not what they should be...but then, neither are my ears

A few years ago,we needed to replace our old TV. Our new TV wouldn't fit into our cabinet. We were wondering what we could store in it when I suddenly remembered the LPs in the loft.We rescued them and had great fun listening to them again . It was quite a shock to discover that we preferred the sound of the LPs to the CDs. Much more depth and warmth somehow, and that long forgotten "click" on certain tracks was quite reassuring!

hi

I don't buy em any more but I have a load of them somewhere.

Just copied track of Gordon Lightfoot's version of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face off his Album Early Morning Rain.

Just going to copy The Compleat Tom Paxton Album for him. Not listened to these for ages.

Ah nostalgia........!!

Cheers

My ears neither but no lack of space there

I remember that people would walk around with Lps under their arm ( you can't really do it with cds!). Sometimes, I'm sure they were making a statement, such as, "Hey, I'm cool, I'm into [ insert title of "hip" artist/album].
