ROOM FULL OF ROSES - SONS OF THE PIONEERS - Words and music by Tim Spencer

If I sent a rose to you
For ev'ry time you made me blue,
You'd have a room full of roses.
If I sent a rose of white
For ev'ry time I cried all night,
You'd have a room full of roses.

And if you took the petals and you tore them all apart,
You'd be tearin' at the roses. the way you tore my heart.

If someday you're feelin' blue,
You could send some roses, too.
I don't want a room full of roses.
I just want my arms full of you.

Note. Song was recorded by several artists, including George Morgan.

I am in the unusual position of knowing the chords but no lyrics about nuns bemoaning the fact that Sr, Josephine had left after having such a good time gambling, drinking etc. with them. The departed nun is surely an escaped prisoner but the nuns are oblivious to this fact.

Possibly written by Jake Thackray?

Any clues please.

Here y'go

Sister Josephine

Oh Sister Josephine
What do all these Policemen mean
By coming to the convent in a grim limosine
After Sister Josephine

While you Sister Josephine
You sit with your boots up on the alter screen
You smoke one last cigar
What a funny nun you are

The Policemen say thet Josephine's a burglar in diguise
Big Bad Norman fifteen years on the run
The sisters disbelieve it "No that can't be Josephine"
Just think about her tenderness towards the younger nuns

Oh Sister Josephine
They're searching the chapel where you've been seen
The nooks and the crannies of the nun's canteen
After Sister Josephine

While you sister Josephine
You sip one farewell benedictine
Before your Au Revoir
A right funny nun you are

Admittedley her hands are big and hairy
And embelished with a curious tatoo
Admittedly her voice is on the deep side
And she seems to shave more often than the other sisters do

Oh Sister Josephine
Founder of the convent pontoon team
They're looking through your bundles of rare magazines
After Sister Josephine

While you sister Josephine
You give a goodbye sniff of benzedrine
To the convent budgerigar
A bloody funny nun you are

No longer will her snores ring through the chapel during prayers
Nor her lustful moanings fill the stilly night
No more empty bottles of alter wine come clunking from her cell
No longer will the cloister toilet seat stand upright

Oh Sister Josephine
Slipping through their fingers like vaseline
Leaving them to clutch your empty crinoline
After Sister Josephine

While you sister Josephine
Sprinting through the suburbs when last seen
Dressed only in your wimple and your rosary
A right funny nun you seem to be.

Thanks Andy - what clever lyrics they are.

Wow! That takes me back a few years. I think the last time I heard that was on TW3 (The English TV show 'That was the week that was'). Must have been back in the early sixties. I'll see if I can find my copy of Jake Thackray's 'On Again, on again' and transcribe some of his songs. I couldn't find any on DT.

Thanks,

Bert.

Hi Bert,

I've already transcribed Sister Josephine, Brother Gorilla, The Bantam Cock and Old Molly Metcalfe, and made them available to DT. (Only recently though).

Hi AndyG-

Haven't received aforementioned lyrics as yet; I'll keep an eye out for them.

They won't make the very-soon-to-be-released April 1997 edition; we already have a total of 6500 lyrics and we're working on editiong, formatting and cross-referencing them. BUT (as far as the DT goes), after April, there's October.

thanx. dick

Hi Dick and Andy,

I gather that Andy's lyrics to Jake's songs haven't yet materialised. I must admit that I only checked for 'Sister Josephine'. Jake's lyrics are too good to keep buried.

Regards John

Has anybody seen or heard of Jake recently? He used to teach with my dad at Intake High when I was young. We kept in touch and went to bookings etc. but then he disappeared totally. I'd love to know how he is. (I was Christine Jackson in those days!!)
