That song is about us guys and gals that hung out at the No Exit Coffeehouse in E. Rogers Park in Chicago. I sang there for almost 4 decades. The song really brings it all back. For me, she had a different name...

Art: I had that CD tucked away somewhere and couldn't find it and thought is was lost, until you mentioned it a while back on one of the coffee house threads. I listened to it over and over and boy can Michael write. The song "I Brought My Father With Me", is my favorite on the CD. But everytime I listen to it all the woay through I find another favorite. I envy your memories Art.........

Dear Frank Of Toledo, It would be just great if you could provide me with the chords for Elizabeth dark and I brought my father with me. It's a pleasure to know that those songs had an impact on a number of us. I have always felt Michael Smith is a tremendous song writer and picker. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards, Mike Strobel

One of the things I love about this folk-world is how things connect in strange ways sometimes.

I first heard a Michael Smith song when Rick and I were on honeymoon. We spent an evening at the Black Swan Folk Club in York where a singer called Marilyn C?? sang Vampire. We hadn't really expected to find an American singer in a local Yorkshire club, so naturally we got talking. Marilyn was from Chicago, where she knew Michael, but had moved to Glasgow when she got married.

Back in Toronto, we discovered that Michael was a good friend of our friend, Norm Hacking. A few months later, we got a chance to see him when he came to Toronto to do a concert with Norm. A great performance, every song was a gem and we turned into real fans. Now we go to see him whenever he comes to Toronto and are never disappointed.

My favourite song used to be Sister Clarissa, until Michael and Norm got together and wrote a song called "This One's The Dreamer".

BALLAD OF ELIZABETH DARK
by Michael Smith

Let me sing you the ballad of Elizabeth Dark. I've been workin' on it since the time
We hung out at this coffeehouse in Rogers Park like two kids at a Five and Dime.
She would read Dostoyevsky by the yellow moon that hung like an orange in the trees
While I worked on the tune to the mystery tune of Elizabeth Dark and me.

This was back in the days of the folk music craze—Lenny and poetry and jazz,
Cats and chicks snappin' their fingers to Lord Buckley doin' "THE NAZZ",
Kierkegaard, Ginsberg, Sartre and free love—parties to cover the rent,
We all wanted to be existentialists. None of us knew what the hell it meant.

(Refrain)
Now I take the "El" to Loyola and I walk along the Sheridan sand,
Where the waves are breakin' over the jetty and the wind is like an icy hand.
Theodore says that the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime.
Maybe I'll see Elizabeth D. one more time.

Her hair was long and flowing—a river of Zen down her back.
We had spaghetti with Ferlinghetti and wine with Jack Kerouac.
Things were real cool. One day I came home from school and Elizabeth Dark wasn't there,
No river of ravens and hair—no Dark at the top of the stairs.

(Refrain) Now I take the "El" to Loyola and I walk along the Sheridan sand,
Where the waves are breaking over the jetty, where the wind is like an icy hand.
Theodore says that the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime.
Maybe I'll see Elizabeth D. one more time.

Sometimes I take out my old bongos, reminisce about makin' the scene,
Read my Tarot tellin' fortunes from grounds from a beat-up espresso machine.
I'm a beatnik lost in the future like a model-T Ford out in space,
Still as in love with Elizabeth Dark as the first time I saw her face.

Now I take the "El" to Loyola and I walk along the Sheridan sand,
Where the waves are breakin' over the jetty, where the wind is like an icy hand,
Theodore says that the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime,
Maybe I'll see Elizabeth D. one more time.

Rogers Park = a very far Northside neighborhood of Chicago. Actually the last part of Chicago before the first suburb along the Lake Michigan shore--Evanston.

The "El" = the elevated CTA train--Chicago Transit Authority)

Lenny = Lenny Bruce

Lord Buckley was a stand-up monologist and humorist--one of the hippest around---a white rapper you might say. One of his most famous hip discourses was "THE NAZZ"--about Jesus (of NAZZareth) and all those "hip cats and kitties." The rest of the names there are philosophers except Allen Ginsberg--the author of the beat poem "HOWL" and many more.

Loyola = Loyola University. Right on the lake at Devon Avenue, during the tremendous winter storms, there are monumental ice formations ---sheets and icicles and gargoyles made of crystalline fantasy concretions. Some day you'll have to see the photos I took there. One is an entire drunken septet sculpted in ice--all completely natural---6 "people" with their arms around each other harmonizing. At least that's what it has always looked like to me.

Ferlinghetti = a beat poet of that unique and inspiring (for me) era.

Jack Kerouac = the best known writer to come out of the BEAT GENERATION. Author of _Mexico City Blues_, __The Dharma Bums__, __Desolation Angels__, __Big Sur__, __On The Road__ and many others.

"Sheridan sand" refers to Sheridan Road---the N.S. street that runs North along the lake.

I don't know who Theodore is/was!

I do know who Elizabeth Dark was--for me anyhow...

__THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS__ was a fine film --1960-- described as a simple, eloquent drama, set in 1920s Oklahoma with Robert Preston as a traveling salesman caught in a passionless marriage. His relationships with his wife (Dorothy Maguire), daughter (Shirley Knight)and "friend" (Angela Lansbury) are played out in a series of beautifully acted scenes. The film was taken from William Inge's Pulitzer Prize winning play. (Leonard Maltin)

Sorry, I don't have the chords.

Michael Smith, Mark Dvorak, Barbara Barrow (Michael's wife), and Tom Dundee are now the quartet called WEAVERMANIA who have been recreating the Weavers in recent years. Pete Seeger joined them in a concert at the Chicago Historical Society about nine months back. It was broadcast live by WFMT-FM in Chicago.

I love this man's melodies, words and voice. Was lucky enough to see him at a local winery, intimate setting, only about 60 people...they best way. Vampire blew me away, I wish I had it on CD. Another fav. is Time (creeping down the hallway)--sheer poetry.

Eliz. Dark is so evocative--I have never been to Chicago, but was a beatnik in Venice,CA and all those references bring back great memories.

Was introduced to Michael Smith through the song "The Dutchman" and would consider him a great songwriter if he never wrote anything else.

I don't know if anyone is still interested but I've recently learned this song so will add my chords to Art's lyrics (with a few of my edits).

This is the version from Michael's new live CD "Such Things Are Finely Done". To line up the chords with the lyrics, copy the text into notepad or a word processing app and use a fixed width font like courier.

Thanks for the chords, Rich
You wouldn't happen to have the chords for Paxton/Gibson, "Loving You" - would you. I've been asking for a while and no luck so far.
Anyhow -
Michael and Jamie O'Reilly just finished performing their Gift of the Magi around town - it was great, and a cd is available from Jamie's site.
Barbara Barrow's cd of Michael's songs to the Grapes of Wrath - I hope - will come out in '04.
It may be that the OTSFM will have a WeaverMania and Frank Hamilton show later in the year - at least, I think Frank will have a show at the Jones Family house in Lombard.
I believe Michael plays in a sort of open C tuning   - I think he said that he has some aches in his fingers and this helps. I would guess that it is something like DADGCE.
Art, do you know his tuning?
That's the news from Lake Woebegone, I mean Lake Michigan - Happy New Year to all.
