I listened to it over and over and boy can Michael write. The song "I Brought My Father With Me", is my favorite on the CD. But everytime I listen to it all the woay through I find another favorite. I first heard a Michael Smith song when Rick and I were on honeymoon. We spent an evening at the Black Swan Folk Club in York where a singer called Marilyn C?? sang Vampire. We hadn't really expected to find an American singer in a local Yorkshire club, so naturally we got talking. Marilyn was from Chicago, where she knew Michael, but had moved to Glasgow when she got married. Back in Toronto, we discovered that Michael was a good friend of our friend, Norm Hacking. A few months later, we got a chance to see him when he came to Toronto to do a concert with Norm. A great performance, every song was a gem and we turned into real fans. Now we go to see him whenever he comes to Toronto and are never disappointed. My favourite song used to be Sister Clarissa, until Michael and Norm got together and wrote a song called "This One's The Dreamer". Duckboots |

Actually the last part of Chicago before the first suburb along the Lake Michigan shore--Evanston. The "El" = the elevated CTA train--Chicago Transit Authority) Lenny = Lenny Bruce Lord Buckley was a stand-up monologist and humorist--one of the hippest around---a white rapper you might say. One of his most famous hip discourses was "THE NAZZ"--about Jesus (of NAZZareth) and all those "hip cats and kitties." The rest of the names there are philosophers except Allen Ginsberg--the author of the beat poem "HOWL" and many more. Loyola = Loyola University. Right on the lake at Devon Avenue, during the tremendous winter storms, there are monumental ice formations ---sheets and icicles and gargoyles made of crystalline fantasy concretions. Some day you'll have to see the photos I took there. One is an entire drunken septet sculpted in ice--all completely natural---6 "people" with their arms around each other harmonizing. At least that's what it has always looked like to me. Ferlinghetti = a beat poet of that unique and inspiring (for me) era. Jack Kerouac = the best known writer to come out of the BEAT GENERATION. Author of _Mexico City Blues_, __The Dharma Bums__, __Desolation Angels__, __Big Sur__, __On The Road__ and many others. "Sheridan sand" refers to Sheridan Road---the N.S. street that runs North along the lake. I don't know who Theodore is/was! I do know who Elizabeth Dark was--for me anyhow... Art Thieme

His relationships with his wife (Dorothy Maguire), daughter (Shirley Knight)and "friend" (Angela Lansbury) are played out in a series of beautifully acted scenes. Was lucky enough to see him at a local winery, intimate setting, only about 60 people...they best way. Vampire blew me away, I wish I had it on CD. Another fav. is Time (creeping down the hallway)--sheer poetry. Eliz. Dark is so evocative--I have never been to Chicago, but was a beatnik in Venice,CA and all those references bring back great memories. |

I've been asking for a while and no luck so far. Anyhow - Michael and Jamie O'Reilly just finished performing their Gift of the Magi around town - it was great, and a cd is available from Jamie's site. Barbara Barrow's cd of Michael's songs to the Grapes of Wrath - I hope - will come out in '04. It may be that the OTSFM will have a WeaverMania and Frank Hamilton show later in the year - at least, I think Frank will have a show at the Jones Family house in Lombard. I believe Michael plays in a sort of open C tuning - I think he said that he has some aches in his fingers and this helps. I would guess that it is something like DADGCE. Art, do you know his tuning?
