Friends, some of you have questioned whether Otis, the Labrador Retriever with existential angst who's the hero of Otis Is Flying, a song purportedly written by Tom Chapin and myself, really exists, or is merely a figment of Tom's and my admittedly fertile imaginations. He does. Not only that, he's in training for the Westminster Dog Show, and will be flying there in February on Canadian-based Labrador Airlines. For proof, please refer to: (the original message contained MP3 files and action images of Otis) •The MP3 below, which establishes that I actually recorded the song in question for my latest CD Courage. •Below that, a photo of Otis in training along the Hudson River. •Even further below, the lyrics to Otis Is Flying. Please be sure to root for Otis at the Westminister. Thanks so much, Si OTIS IS FLYING (Tom Chapin & Si Kahn) Me and Otis down by the river Walking together in the heat of the day Me on my two feet, Otis on his four feet As the geese fly south down the Hudson River flyway And the geese look down at the old railway station. In his imagination Otis is flying It's the existential angst of the Labrador Retriever And it will last until suppertime What if our lives were measured in dog years? Would I still be here? I can't figure it out So we turn toward home where supper is waiting The river flows on and the geese fly south And the geese look down at the old railway station. In his imagination Otis is flying It's the existential angst of the Labrador Retriever And it will last until suppertime And it will last until suppertime Words and music by Tom Chapin and Si Kahn Copyright Sundance Music and Joe Hill Music (ASCAP).
