14 Dec 10 - 09:36 AM (#3053255) Subject: Churchtown Folk Club From: Barb'ry Churchtown Folk Club is held on 3rd Wednesday of each month (next one tomorrow, 15th) at the Punchbowl Inn, Church Street, Churchtown Preston PR3 0HT - please note it is NOT the Churchtown near Southport but halfway between Preston and Lancaster. The pub has a good selection of beers and the landlord serves food at half time! It's run as a singaround, starting at 8.15ish - no amps as the room is not big - tunes and songs welcome. Can't think of anything else but if anyone fancies coming and needs more info, please pm me. Hope to see some of you there Barb'ry |

20 Jan 11 - 07:09 AM (#3078519) Subject: RE: Churchtown Folk Club From: Jack Blandiver Hitherto, Churchtown (AKA Kirkland) has been a place we've gone to for the church (Saint Helen's, known as The Cathedral of The Fylde) which features some notable carvings inside & out. I have an especial fondness for the salvaged misericords which have an idiosyncratic vernacular energy bordering on the primitive (such as THIS) which is the very quality I'm always on the look out for in singarounds, especially those in ancient public houses in remote mist-shrouded villages by the light of a moon fit to howl at. I think we found it last night in the Punch Bowl - with some damn fine singing all round and a welcome emphasis on the Idiomatic Traditional that is becoming all too rare in this day an age. Fine choruses too - I used the opportunity to debut my Lord Thomas & Fair Ellender which found suitable transfiguration by the strength of the spontaneous chorus alone. If high point there was, it was a version of Child #10 sung to mesmerising melodeon accompaniment which was still ringing in my ears as we made an early departure and Churchtown vanished away into the mists behind us... |

15 Mar 11 - 06:15 AM (#3114007) Subject: RE: Churchtown Folk Club From: Barb'ry Hi again Churchtown Folk Club this week but on Thursday instead of Wednesday! This is a 'one off' as our landlord, Paul, is Irish and wanted us to help him celebrate St Patrick's. It would be lovely to see you there - expect good Irish food and rather dubious costumes from the bar staff! |

19 Apr 11 - 03:25 AM (#3138001) Subject: RE: Churchtown Folk Club From: LesB " Churchtown in Southport is far too well heeled to countenance a folk club", in reply to the above guest's comment. I live in Churchtown, but unfortunately i'm more down at heel than well heeled these days. But of course it's only a few minutes drive to go to the Bothy, where last Sunday we had a great night with Mick Ryan & Paul Downes. I must try & get to the other Churchtown sometime. Cheers Les |

19 Apr 11 - 03:57 PM (#3138406) Subject: RE: Churchtown Folk Club From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Wednesday rehearsals it is, alas! We had a picnic in the cemetary of St. Michael's the other day before toddling along the canal from Guy's to Barton Grange - odd the pull of garden centres when we no longer have a garden but my nasturtiums are sprouting well in the back yard... One of these days, eh? |
