Tony McCarthy wrote a song in 1971 called The Death of the Clyde. I have gleaned various things about him from threads and other places [he played copncertina, edited magazines - Sanity and Top & Tail], but wonder if anyone can help with more detail about where he came from, when he died, etc.

is he the same person who edited a book called bawdy folk songs?
was he the same person who works for or worked for rte producing trad music programmes.

I would occasionally meet a Tony McCarthy who played anglo concertina ~~ I particularly remember he liked to sing Lovely Joan ~~ at gatherings given at his Hampstead flat [which I shared with him before my marriage in 1959] by John Brunner, who wrote the CND anthem The H-Bomb's Thunder & went on to become a famous sf writer [died 1995].

Tony, if this the right one, had a sister called Fiona [a nurse: not to be confused with the journalist & biographer of same name]. I believe Tony played as an accompanist on at least one of Alex Campbell's records.

Regret have no further or more up-to-date info about him. By no means sure he is dead; he would only be in his 60s-early70s now, I should estimate.

I think it likely he edited the bawdy songs book, but not that he'd an RTE connection. Certain he is the one on the Alex Campbell album. On another old Mudcat thread he is said to have been a CND singing stalwart, and to have published CND songsheets, but that he has died.
-M-, tell me, can you recall what kind of an accent he had? Scots, English, Irish?

Hi - I knew Tony in the mid 1960's. I used to skip school and hitch up to London from the suburbs - Tony worked at the CND headquarters in Carthusian Street, where I used to volunteer, sticking down envelopes and suchlike! He introduced me to Izzy Young at an Alex Campbell concert at Orpington Town Hall. Izzy was over from Greenwich Village where he ran the Folklore Center. Izzy now has a Folklore Centrum in Stockholm. What happened to Tony?

Regards,

Annabel (then known as "Toots" !).
