Ron Bankley On M. Shocked Top Ten List

Michelle Shocked has released a list of the top 10 guest performers from her American Idle tour and Ron is number 2 on the list:

Roadworks 2010: 'American Idle' was an incredible experience. I've rallied together my Top Ten "Idles"; songs heard around the country from fellow songwriters doing a brilliant job of putting a face and giving a voice to folks caught in the cogs of the ever-grinding engine of global capital. They've graciously allowed me to post their songs on my website, and we're discussing possibly publishing the compilation on iTunes and sending it around to community radio stations, perhaps to benefit our favorite community organizations. So a very special thanks to Andy Sharkey for her uncanny Simon Cowell-esque abilities, and an all-star American Idle cast including Johanna Divine, Ron Bankley, Jon Shain, Marc Haney, Dianne Karelovich, John Clark, John Lynch, Paul Kenny, Zach Peterson and Joe Renner. Their work speaks for itself, so please take the time to listen to:

1. Johanna Divine - The Big Grab - Visit Johanna's website
2. Ron Bankley - Break Even - Visit Ron's website
3. Jon Shain - Dyehouse Blues - Visit Jon's website
4. Marc Haney - Franklin Co. Kansas
5. Dianne Karelovich - There Goes the Neighborhood
6. John Clark - Hope in Hard Times
7. John Lynch - What About Mainstreet
8. Paul Kenny - Better Days - Visit Paul's website
9. Zach Peterson - S.N.A.F.U - Visit Zach's website
10. Joe Renner - Mobsters, Gangsters & Banksters

PS. Some of the features on Ron's site, such as the photos and music player don't work in Firefox, I recommend using IE.

Can`t think of a guy who deserves it more. He also let me know it`s OK if I keep calling him Ron.

You're lucky - he told me to speak to his agent if I wanted to talk to him.

Well, it`s beginning to look like `Yo, Ronnie baby` might be out.

I am so darned excited for him. He`s a wonderful guy, GREAT poet and song writer, DYNAMITE guitar player, very expressive singer and wonderful friend.

Ron, please meet maeve. She`s yer new publicity director.

I must say, he does look better without the moustache. However, if that`s nose hairs, it`ll work.

Thanks Bob for posting this... it's a nice follow-up to the original thread at the Cafe from last May, when Michelle was putting out the call for songs that fit her "Idle" tour.. so this site was valuable in that respect. She's a strong and ethical lady. Generous as well.
So it's a good feeling to be included in her vision.

and I got to meet Little Hawk at a very crowded Hugh's Room in TO

I like that mustache, Maeve... kind of a Django thing

anyway, it's a nice present all around at this time... hopefully a lot of good will come from it in many communities spread all over this continent...

okay, now onto Murdoch's new stuff    shhhhh

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Busy all day with hockey and family gathering.
Great news Ron and hopefully folks that are in positions to move things take notice.
Have a great Christmas (and this is a good start.) and Hi! to Loraine.

Maybe those pickin' fingers will actually get a little of the kind of recognition they deserve! But then maybe pretty soon he'd be too snooty to talk to his old mates, and then from there to disappearance in a cloud of designer drugs and groupies. So I s'pose we should be careful what we wish for.

as I once told Bruce , at our age it's grope-ees.... and really I'd much rather be famous after I die so I don't have to do interviews.. ha, ha

btw I liked the review that you did of 'Insurgent Sun' awhile back. I just stumbled across it the other day... I want to get the last 2 cds to you... does Bruce have your contact info ?

Little known about Ron is that he is also one helluva poet, separate from his song writing. (I`ve always found the two arts to be very different, but until recently I didn`t know about his poetic bent.)

Bankley has been responsible for helping so many folks, me included. Of all the musicians I know, there are two with whom I`d go on stage without prior rehearsal. He`s one of `em.

As a producer he`s awesome: easy to work with and basically right about his decisions. I think I drive him nutso at times, but into every life a little rain must fall.

He knows people all over everywhere. He made note that I`d done some volunteer work for Eugene McCarthy way back. I now have the one button I cared for thanks to Ron. He knew a fellow in Georgia (USA) who collected and sold memorabilia (sp) and he grabbed the button for me. He`s thoughtful and kind. He and I laugh over the strangest things. His humour is sharp, insightful and funny. Hard to find a better friend than him. HOWEVER, the cape thing has gotta go. See you on the 7th.

I'll let you know when the songs are available on iTunes or whatever.
Most of the performers don't have much of a web presence. So it'll be an introduction to a larger audience. There's a bit on myspace, but that site has really become cumbersome since it was 'improved'.. anyhow, the songs are an interesting cross section of social commentary from the grassroots or underbelly of the current situation in this part of the world at least.. There were 100s of songs pitched her way, so there's a lot of folks with things to say which seldom get heard outside of immediate circles. Personally, this is an eye-opener. We often feel isolated in our musical convictions.
Michelle is kind enough to show us that we aren't...

ps. Frogprince: Bruce passed along your address to me.
I'll send something after skid row Santa staggers back home ..

thanks to Phil in Plains Ga.for that...He has the wackiest stuff from stink bombs to Nixon postcards and old Creek arrowheads.

He passed along a copy of 'Thunder Thieves' to Jimmy Carter for me.. I should have done a version of 'Peanut Vendor' for him.. maybe next time

as I recall, I also gave L.H. a souvenir from Plains, in the form of an old picture postcard of Ronald Reagan with Bonzo the chimp. I thought Chongo might appreciate seeing his relatives
