When I moved to near eastwood in Notts about forty five years ago now. I was amazed to find that the local working class people had a real hatred, resentment etc of the memory of their most famous son DH lawrence. I think it was no time to be perceived as different in any way. Little villages seemed to be so very insular back in those days. No doubt the devil was just a stranger passing through. |
