Hi, I am trying to trace a song that has the lyric "Zion awake the slumber breaks" within it. A friend has been trying to recall it from many years ago, so any help would be welcomed. Thanks guys.

Well, this song (or poem?) contains the right words:

From Gospel in All Lands, Volume 22 (New York: Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, May, 1901), page 224:

DAUGHTER OF ZION.
By Adeline F. Webb.

O Daughter of Zion, rejoice and be glad;
Thy King cometh to-day in majesty clad.
Awake from thy slumber, break forth into song,
With jubilant rapture his praises prolong.

CHORUS: Arise, arise, in thy bridal adorning,
The Star of the Morning appears in the sky;
Thy Bridegroom returns, millennium is dawning.
O Queen of the Century! Daybreak is nigh.

O Daughter of Zion, arise now and shine,
Thy long night is past, and a glory divine
Is risen upon thee; awake, O awake!
With the century's dawning thy morning doth break.

Go publish the tidings, "God reigneth on high,"
Go publish sweet peace and good will far and nigh,
Salvation proclaim to the lost and enslaved,
Christ sprinkles the nations, and they shall be saved.

O Church of Jehovah and Daughter of God,
Christ Jesus before thee this pathway hath trod;
Break forth into joy, sing together, be free,
Thy King in his majesty cometh to thee.

The above hymn seems to be based in part on a paraphrase of Isaiah 52:1-2 (in the KJV):
[1] Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come unto thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.
[2] Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.
Any other hymn based on the same passage would likely contain some of the same words and phrases.

Here's an even better match:

From Christ in Song, a facsimile reproduction of a hymnal published in 1908 by F. E. Belden, new edition published by Review and Herald Publishing Association, 2008, page 740.

The title page indicates that the hymnal was popular with Seventh-day Adventists until 1941.

771.
ZION, AWAKE!
Words, C. Wesley. Music, Edwin Barnes.

1. Zion, awake! Thy slumber break;
No longer in thy sins lie down;
His garment of salvation take,
His beauty and His strength put on.

2. Shake off the dust that blinds thy sight,
And hides the promise from thine eyes;
Arise, and struggle into light;
Thy great deliv'rer calls, Arise!

3. Vessels of mercy, sons of grace,
Be purged from ev'ry sinful stain;
Be like your Lord, His word embrace,
Nor bear His hallow'd name in vain.

Another possibility is the carol 'Wachet auf', to the tune used by Bach in his Cantata 140, but written originally by Philipp Nicolai around 1597. Perhaps the most commonly used translation is by F.C.Birkit and begins: Wake, O wake, with tidings thrilling the watchmen all the air are filling, arise, Jerusalem, arise!
If this looks interesting I'll happily type up the rest of the words for your friend, provided that he's survived being fried.

I wonder if we should apply equal caution in this day and age to the Z word as we do to the N word.

Thank you everyone for the excellent help, Jim's transcript were the words being sought, so I have achieved my task.

The Doctor
Thank you, it was the from Jim above that was sought. He was not fried, my typing was...

Richard, why the comment about the "Z word" as you put it, it is commonplace for no end of Americans in the Methodist, Mormon etc religions? Has it somehow become politically incorrect and I have missed it?
Personally, whilst my faith is currently somewhat tested, and as an Englishman, I know the word, firstly from the Bible (KJ6 and others), then from school assemblies (in the hymns) then at Sunday School (Hymns and Sermons - Gospel and Church of England), and through living in Bermuda and British Virgin Islands have become reunited with the word again.

Sorry WysiwyG
New to posting here, hence forgetting the Ident on Guest above (yes as you all know it was me)...
but I do not understand.

Wysiwyg: the "dots" are in the hymnal I linked to. You can see them there. Click the link.
